On March 20, the SUNY College of Optometry’s foundation, the Optometric Center of New York (OCNY), will hold its 12th annual ‘Eyes on New York’ gala. This year we will be celebrating the successful conclusion of our $10 million Vision and the Promise
campaign, which we officially completed last October, by holding the event in a truly iconic New York City venue: The Plaza. The gala is always a wonderful celebration, filled with excitement, and it’s a great opportunity for us to honor and celebrate individuals for the excellent work that they do. Of course, it is also our most important fundraising event of the year and a critical component in our ongoing effort to provide significant support for scholarships, patient care and research.
I am pleased to announce that we will be honoring Mr. Angel Alvarez, the founder and CEO of ABB OPTICAL GROUP, the nation’s leading supplier of contact lenses. Mr. Alvarez has been at the helm of the company for a quarter century and, during that time, ABB OPTICAL GROUP has helped tens of thousands of eye care professionals around the country succeed at what they do. His work has had an enormous impact on the entire optometric community and I am happy that we will have the opportunity to celebrate his contributions to our profession.
This year, we will also hear from our honorary chair, the dynamic Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher, the truly remarkable leader of the State University of New York, the largest comprehensive system of higher education in the United States. Dr. Allan Barker, vice president of the board of directors for Optometry Cares – The foundation of the American Optometric Association—and president and CEO of eyecarecenter, will serve as the corporate chair. And, of course, we’ll have lots more excitement during the evening as well. This is something that you won’t want to miss!
While our most recent campaign may be over, the work that we’re doing to support the College is far from complete and the gala is a major contributor to our efforts. In fact, as SUNY Optometry continues to expand its work caring for the community, engaging in cutting-edge research and developing the next generation of doctors and vision scientists, our need to support that work grows along with it.
These are exciting times for the OCNY and the SUNY College of Optometry and we hope that you will be able to join us for this magnificent evening on March 20.
