BreakOUT! Mourns the Loss of Two Black Trans Women, Chyna Dupree and Ciara McElveen, Murdered in New Orleans in Less than 36 Hours
BreakOUT! is deeply saddened to hear of the loss of Ciara McElveen and Chyna Dupree, two Black transgender women murdered in New Orleans in less than 36 hours.
Chyna and Ciara mark the fifth and sixth trans women of color to be murdered already this year. Last year there were at least 27 trans people murdered, mostly trans women of color, making it the deadliest year on record for trans people in the U.S. By this time last year, five trans people had been murdered, making it likely that the murder rate in 2017 could equal or surpass that of last year’s.
While the numbers are staggering and many in our communities are still in shock, some BreakOUT! members say that they refuse to be afraid and that they won’t be silent. But we have so much other work to do in our communities- we need jobs, housing, education, and access to safe spaces- and yet we continue to have to simply fight for our lives.
BreakOUT! is prioritizing identifying the needs of our members and the larger LGBTQ community at this time and will be creating space for friends and family to grieve and celebrate their lives.
