MARCH 5 FIRST THURSDAY ARTWALK– FREE ONE-HOUR GUIDED GALLERY TOUR AT 6:30PM  This walking tour highlights the diverse talents of artists in open studios and galleries throughout the San Pedro Waterfront Arts District.

The tour begins at the San Pedro Chamber of Commerce’s Board Room Gallery (390 W. 6th St.) and visits about 3 galleries/studios each month. It provides an opportunity to hear from and talk to the artists and curators about their works and exhibitions. The SPCC Board Room Gallery offers a new show each month with the theme "All San Pedro Art," presented by member artists of the San Pedro Art Association.

March 5 First Thursday Tour Itinerary:
  • Post-Future: The Art Company, the gallery of Alida Post and John Von Hammersveld is  featuring an exhibit and book signing for Robert Landau’s Rock 'N' Roll Billboards of the Sunset Strip. There was a time when you could drive down the Sunset Strip and feast your eyes on carefully coordinated, hand painted, one-of-a-kind billboards created by multiple artists and craftspeople. Once taken down, the temporary displays would have been lost to the collective memory if it weren’t for Robert Landau’s documentation of their existence. Meet and greet/ presentation and book signing by Robert Landau, 5-9PM. For more info click here.
  • TransVagrant @ Warschaw Gallery: Around Black features works by HK Zamani, whose recent paintings dispense with the all-too-familiar conventions defining current abstraction where too much is almost never enough. Spare, rigorous, often near-defiant, Zamani's works flirt with representation but never accede. For more info click here.
  • Marylyn and Chuck Klaus Center for the Arts Grand Opening: This month's tour will end with a visit to Marymount California University’s new facility — which houses Marymount’s arts and media programs. Festivities planned for the March 5 celebration include the debut of the student gallery and performances by the Marymount Jazz Ensemble.

Parking is free downtown after 6PM and always free at Ports O' Call Village, Berth 77. The LA Waterfront Red Car Trolley will take you to and from the San Pedro Arts District. The trolley runs from 5 to 10PM.

ROCK 'N' ROLL BILLBOARDS OF THE SUNSET STRIP EXHIBIT AND BOOK SIGNING Growing up in the mid-sixties, photographer Robert Landau began documenting his neighborhood: the iconic Sunset Boulevard, with its transient, yet artfully created billboards. As the billboards changed, Landau made an effort to maintain his regular vantage point to document each new piece. Alida Post of Post-Future brings these historic photographs to San Pedro on First Thursday March 5. Robert Landau will give 20-minute presentations about his work followed by a book signing at 6 and 8PM. A wide oeuvre of his work will be exhibited, as well as limited edition prints for purchase. Post-Future Sunday Salon with Landau will be held on March 8 at 2PM.

Post-Future: The Art Company is located at 443 W. 6th St., San Pedro. For more information call (424) 224-7656 or click here.

LESSONS LEARNED, RECENT WORKS BY HYUNG MO LEE AT LOS ANGELES HARBOR COLLEGE FINE ARTS GALLERY  Hyung Mo Lee's practice reflects many of the aesthetics and philosophies associated with the Italian Arte Povera (literally poor art) movement whose artists attacked corporate mentality with an art of unconventional materials and style, often incorporating found objects in their works. Lee's drawings, sculptures and installations are notable for their radical choice of materials and emphasis on laborious and time-consuming process.

Lee is a 2013-2016 fellow in Angels Gate Cultural Center's Studio Artist Program, San Pedro.

The exhibition will open with an artist's reception on Saturday, March 7 from 4 to 7PM. Lessons Learned runs through April 24. Gallery hours are Monday - Thursday, 11AM to 4PM, and by appointment. For more information contact Ron Linden, ronmon@dslextreme.com, or call 310-600-4873, or 310-233-4411. LAHC Fine Arts Gallery is located at 1111 S. Figueroa Pl., Wilmington.

THEATRE OPEN HOUSES: In their vision of Elysian Fields, TE San Pedro Rep, developing artists train alongside artists of multiple disciplines, where actors dance and dancers act at unimagined levels.

Meet the group at the monthly First Thursday Open House, 311 W. 7th St., San Pedro. For more information call (424) 264-5747
or click here.

The Troupe is a new kind of youth theatre company that understands the unique importance of each of student, and offers quality training in acting, singing, and dancing, as well as performance opportunities. Youth theatre training is provided at little or no cost for the participants. Visit them at 619 S. Mesa St., San Pedro. For more information click here.
