Mary has always wanted to work at a library! Some of her fondest childhood memories are going to the library with her dad.  However, her career path started out in teaching.  She’s taught third, fourth and fifth grade. After she earned her Master’s in Library and Information and Science from SJSU, she became an Elementary School Librarian in Washington and later Japan. Her first foray into public libraries began when she moved from Japan to Pacific Grove and started out as a PG Library volunteer.  Then, she became an On-Call Reference Librarian working primarily in the evenings.  When the previous Children’s Librarian retired, she was fortunate to be offered the position (her dream job).  She’s been working as the Youth Services Librarian for almost three years.  During COVID, Mary tirelessly adapted services for curbside and virtual programming, which can be found on the Library's Youtube channel. Mary was voted 2021 Library Employee of the Year by her City of PG Colleagues.

Mary likes spending time with her family, especially outdoors. Hiking has always been a family favorite, as well as playing board games.  Mary is also a fan of YA fiction. Their daughter moved to Colorado in January to attend the University of Colorado to study nursing and their son is a Junior at Pacific Grove High School.  They are looking forward to visiting Japan next Winter Break.

Our patrons, the community, The Friends of the Library, and staff members are all the reasons Mary loves working at the library!  “It’s wonderful to see and hear a child’s excitement as they come inside the library.  It’s only topped when the excitement extends to finding a book that’s liked so much, it’s read on the spot.”   Mary loves our children’s programs, visiting preschools and elementary schools in Pacific Grove, and class visits to the library.
