AUTO ISSUE 32: February 26, 2016

All Revved Up [with Someplace to Go]…

Beginning next week, while much of the U.S. is either soaked or buried under another half-foot of “partly cloudy,” motorcycle enthusiasts of all stripes are converging on sunny Daytona Beach, Florida for Bike Week.

Motorcyclists in Daytona—and everywhere—blaze their own trails, ride charitably, and express their individuality. And with motorcycle insurance, everyone is free to do just that—all while ensuring their rides are safe from theft or accidental damage.

Each state has its own motorcycle laws governing lights, ride-height, exhaust systems, and other items. Understanding the regulations and knowing a few basic facts about insuring your ride can let you ride safer and freer—and maybe even put a little extra traveling money in your pocket.

Tell me about liability coverage…
Liability insurance is key, because it covers bodily injury and property damage that you may cause to others. However, it doesn't cover you or your motorcycle. When reviewing your policy or shopping around, look into Guest Passenger Liability, which provides protection in the event that a passenger is injured on your motorcycle. (Note: inclusion of this coverage depends on the laws of your state and the company issuing the policy).

And how about collision and comprehensive coverage?
Collision covers damage to your motorcycle if you are involved in a crash. Comprehensive pays for damages caused by events like fire, theft, vandalism. Both are subject to deductibles and other variables—and generally cover only “book” value of your ride.

Cost cutting strategies for the price-conscious rider? Yes, please!
Some of this is commonsense:
*Having a clean driving record means you’ll enjoy lower premiums.
*Completing an MSF-approved safe rider course? That can lop off 10-15% of your annual bill.
*And check out “layup” policies, available in some states with severe winter weather, which let you suspend coverage while you and your bike are off the road.

Keep the tips coming!
Look for other savings that can whittle your insurance costs further, such as motorcycle-club membership benefits or multiple vehicle discounts with a single insurer. Talk to your Insurance Professional to find motorcycle coverage that’s right for your needs and budget—and ride on!
