Briars Rugby Old Boys.
We need you to attend the June 22nd Rugby Lunch at the Briars clubrooms. The $10,000 this generated last year for rugby was a major contributor to the $4,536 profit for Briars Rugby last year.  Without the successful lunch, Rugby would have lost $5,464.  Please reserve this date.

Many Rugby O.B. are also attending the hockey lunch on May 4th.  Why not?  It features rugby speakers.
No – we will not have hockey speakers at the June 22nd Rugby Lunch.

2018 Rugby Chairman - John Slender

Good day to Briars Masters.

I think Old Boys is a bit rough to identify us all with, as we’ve done our time and mastered the game on and off the field.

For many of you, my name isn’t new around the Briars.  I was Chairman and a player in the early 2000’s and had a break from the club for about a decade.  During my absence I’ve witnessed our demise from Div.2 to 4 which has been tough to acknowledge, particularly for many Old Boy/Masters the $3,000 bad behaviour bond applied by Suburban Rugby to Briars in 2016.  Last year I was invited with Chris Walker to restore Rugby, an initiative of Brett Howle.  Initially it wasn’t easy.  Young people are different these days.

After our few early meetings with the club, I said to Chris, “advise the Board to wind up seniors and concentrate on the development of junior rugby.  We can come back in ten years with a whole new generation of Briars.”

It took members from Colleagues, Petersham and Blue Mountains to convince us to persist with restoring the club and last year the hard yards were done on priority items being administration and overall club player skill level.

I met a lot of young Briars and committee people struggling to do their best last season.  This year I made a tough decision to come back and lead Rugby, juggling my engineering company and Briars at the same time.  The only way to do this is by having good people on board and effectively managing our time and tasks.

In doing so a group of young Briars have nominated themselves to help administer Rugby and I believe that their skill sets are the best that have come together in a long time.

The following are the management team for 2018:-
  • Secretary – Mark Nelson (Business Insights Manager-Suncorp)
  • Treasurer – Andy Hogg (Chemical Systems Engineer & Project Manager)
  • Registrar/Gear Steward – James Ashton-Maxwell (Product Sales Manager – DFS Australia)
  • IT & Communications – Andrew Quo (PR Marketing & Management. Also studying a Computer Degree)
  • General Committee – Alex Gonano (Civil Building Project Manager – Crookes Constructions)
  • General Committee – Stacey Howcroft (Project Controls Co-ordinator-Lend Lease)
  • General Committee – Praveen Shanmugalingam (Project Accountant – Mirvac)
Lachlan White has already been announced as Club and 1st Grade Coach.  Next update will advise the full coaching and fitness panel.

An Event’s Team will come together soon and I will give you all a briefing about them and a list of Club events you will hopefully attend.

I hope to see you at some games this year.

Regards
John Slender – Rugby Chairman
