And here we are... on the homeward stretch! Don't know about you, but it's been a loooooong time coming.

November was eventful (give me the name of a month that hasn't been eventful...!?), culminating in the STEM 6-11 Conference at Playford International College. What a wonderful turnout! More than 210 people attended and for those among you who attended, firstly - thank you!, and secondly, we hope you found the day to be professionally beneficial.

The Open Source Teaching in Psychology workshop which was held on same date was, from all accounts, also a roaring success!

We have a couple of things to look forward to in December, namely the New Opportunities for Teaching and Learning in SACE Earth and Environmental Science workshop on Friday 9th December. If you haven't booked yet, now is a good time to scroll down and book :-)!

After we've all had a good rest, we will jump straight back into the Professional Development pond with the Psychology Summer Conference and the Teachers New to SACE Stage 1 & 2 workshops. Oh, but I guess in between those two events, Term 1 will begin and the Summer holidays will be but a distant memory... For now, though, holidays approach and savour them we will!

On that note, SASTA staff and board wish you all a safe and happy festive season. May your well-deserved holidays be restful!

NB: The SASTA office will be closed from Wednesday 21st December 2016 and will reopen on Monday 9th January 2017.

2017 SASTA Awards

There are many great teachers out there that SASTA would like to acknowledge, but often they don't get nominated due to teaching being a very busy profession and people not having the time to fill in nomination forms.

Start thinking now! Alert your Principal. There are a number of Awards for SASTA members.

~ The SASTA Medal - awarded to an individual who has made a significant contribution to SASTA and who has been active in science education.
~ The Credit Union SA / SASTA Outstanding Teacher Award for Junior Primary, Primary, Middle Years and Senior Years teachers - in recognition of teachers' contributions to the education of students in science.
~ The Helen Castle Memorial Scholarship
- designed to assist country science teachers to attend the SASTA Annual Conference and gain professional development to assist themselves and other country teachers to maintain a high standard of science teaching in country areas (2 scholarships of $500 each are available).

2017 Psychology Summer Conference
Date: Friday 20th January 2017
Time: 9.00am to 4.00pm
Venue: Education Development Centre, Milner Street, Hindmarsh

Keynote Address:
The Psychology of Creativity and Innovation by Dr David Cropley

Creativity and Innovation are hot topics in education, business and government. Creativity is generally understood to be concerned with the generation of new ideas, while innovation addresses the exploitation of those new ideas. Both, however, are driven by psychological factors including personality and cognition. In this presentation I will discuss those elements of motivation, personal properties, feelings and thinking styles that appear to favour creativity – what are they, and how are they measured – and will set these in the broader context of creative problem solving. I will outline the relationship between creativity and educational factors such as intelligence, and the presentation will also touch on darker aspects of creativity – how is creativity sometimes misapplied, and is there a relationship to less desirable personal characteristics such as narcissism? Finally, I will also outline the role that psychology and creativity play in shaping organisational performance – why do schools and other organisations need to learn how to be creative?
