Term 1 has been crazy busy with eight workshops taking place; many, many Stage 1 workbooks being packed up and shipped out; organisation for the Annual Conference (the count down is on!!) and the Oliphant Science Awards occurring.

STEM in the Middle Years - practical investigations that develop STEM skills and dispositions

This workshop explores curriculum resources that integrate Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) and are designed to support teachers in implementing learning experiences that are linked to the Australian Curriculum – Science.

Participants will engage in hands-on inquiry based activities that will inform their understanding of investigation types and how to employ them in their teaching program.  

The workshop will provide teachers with links to explicit curriculum materials, investigations and contemporary pedagogical strategies that will enable them to successfully plan and deliver integrated science investigations with a STEM focus.

Who should attend: Secondary / Middles Years teachers

Investigations in Primary Science - STEM Focus
*** NB: this is a repeat of the workshop held on 3rd March 2017 ***
 
Date: Friday 2nd June 2017
Time: 9.00am to 3.00pm
Venue: Education Development Centre, Hindmarsh
 

Children need opportunities to develop practical and inquiry skills in order to engage with the world in a scientific way and to make sense of what they are learning.

This workshop will look at science investigations in action with a focus on integrating STEM skills and dispositions. Teachers will be led through the elements of a scientific investigation, develop an understanding of how to use an investigation planner and have access to a range of ready to use resources.

The workshop will provide teachers with explicit curriculum materials, investigations and contemporary pedagogical strategies to enable them to successfully incorporate the Science Inquiry Skills into their lessons.

Who should attend: Primary school teachers

Designing STEM Tasks - Middle Years

This workshop is designed to help teachers acquire the skills and confidence to design, develop and implement their own STEM-based teaching resources.

EXCITING OLIPHANT NEWS
 
SASTA has developed a free downloadable Teachers Resource Kit for all our Oliphant Science Awards (OSA) Teachers and Coordinators to help bring the competition into the classroom!
 
We are proud to announce that we have a special MC set to host this year’s Open Day! Andrew ‘Cosi’ Costello (Channel 9’s - South Aussie with Cosi) will be coming on board to help us present several fun Science Shows, hands-on Come & Try Activities and of course the showcase of the competition winning projects from 2017!

Girls in STEM Showcase

How are schools building positive dispositions of girls in STEM?

National Science Week is 12-20 August 2017

School theme - FUTURE EARTH

‘Future Earth’, launched in 2015, is a major 10-year international initiative to advance global sustainability science.

Future Earth’s 2025 vision addresses eight key challenges to global sustainability.

The School Grants of up to $500 will be available this year.

Applications for school grants will open 27 February 2017 and close 24 April 2017.

2017 Prime Minister's Prizes for Science 
Online Nominations are now open

First stage of nominations open until Wednesday 12 April 2017, 5.00 pm Canberra time

Each year, the Australian Government honours and celebrates the achievements of Australia’s best scientists, innovators and science teachers through the Prime Minister's Prizes for Science, the nation’s pre-eminent science, research-based innovation and science teaching awards. Science teaching awards include:

  • The Prime Minister's Prize for Excellence in Science Teaching in Primary Schools ($50 000) shared between the recipient and their school); and
  • The Prime Minister's Prize for Excellence in Science Teaching in Secondary Schools ($50 000) shared between the recipient and their school).

Prize recipients will receive national recognition and meet leaders in science, industry, education and government at an awards dinner in the Great Hall of Parliament House, Canberra.

You are invited to nominate a colleague or peer and/or share this Call for Nominations through your  network.
