Welcome to the September edition of the SASTA e-news. It's been a busy month in the office with the Oliphant Science Awards coming to a close and we're now getting ready for the Presentation Ceremony in September!

New Curriculum for 2018 Workshop. The Call for Workshops is now open for the STEM Conference in December and you can pre-order your SASTA SACE Stage 2 Workbooks for 2018.

Early Career Teachers Conference 2017

Date: Friday 13 October
Time: 9.00am - 4.30pm
Venue: Immanuel College, Morphett Road, Novar Gardens

This Conference is an opportunity for early career and pre-service teachers to be involved in interactive learning activities as well as gather resources that will enrich and inform their science teaching.

SACE Stage 2 Biology - New Curriculum for 2018

Date: Tuesday 10 October
Time: 9.00am - 3.00pm
Venue: Education Development Centre, Hindmarsh

With some significant changes in both content and assessment requirements in 2018, this workshop will bring into focus some of these changes and provide an indication on the depth of understanding that will be needed by students. Activities for teaching the new concepts will be modelled, to enable a hands-on experience for participants. This workshop is intended to expand on the workshop given earlier in the year at the SASTA conference in April.

Call for Workshops is now open!

The workshop presentations will cover a range of the content and pedagogies of the Australian Curriculum: Mathematics, Science, Design & Technology and ICT. Participants should be actively involved in the learning through a practical and investigative approach and sessions that link to real world examples of contemporary STEM are encouraged.

SASTA SACE Stage 2 Workbooks

Events and News in the Science Community
In September, the world’s largest space conference – the International Astronautical Congress, will attract 4000 international delegates to Adelaide. DECD has collaborated with experts to design 25 different learning opportunities for teachers and students to put the spotlight on future-focused STEM learning through a space context.

Professional learning for up to 600 teachers will support increased student engagement and achievement in STEM learning. Workshops for up to 1500 primary and secondary students will inspire and excite our students towards a career in STEM-related fields.

National Science Week

National Science Week is over for another year! ASTA would love to know what great science activities were carried out in Australian schools during the week.

Complete the online feedback form (in 6 mins!) and your school could win a visit from Tanya Ha - award-winning Australian environmental campaigner, author, former ABC Catalyst reporter, science communicator and sustainability researcher. You have until 22 September to provide your feedback to be in the running to win.

Oliphant Science Awards Open Day

It was great to see over 1,400 people at the Oliphant Science Awards Open Day on Sunday. Thank you to everyone who came along to the event! The prize winning projects were on display along with come and try stations,  a program of spectacular Science Shows and Andrew 'Cosi' Costello was the MC for the day!

STEM X Academy

Applications close 14 September 2017

If you have been looking for STEM professional development that will transform your teaching by improving your capacity to engage your students in science and STEM and help you create your own STEM resources then look no further. Participants will undertake work with CSIRO and Questacon on a hands-on STEM pedagogy-based program designed to provide practical resources and ideas to take back to the classroom and share with colleagues.

The five day program will be held in Canberra from 7-12 January 2018. Successful applicants will be asked to make a one-off contribution of $485 towards costs. This contribution will cover flights to and from Canberra and the participant's closest capital city, as well as accommodation, meals, transport and venue entry fees associated with the program. Scholarships are also available to offset all costs.
