This week, we're introducing a brand new format for the newsletter! We're all very excited and looking forward to several conveniences and advantages we think this new format will bring. Visit the new blog and let us know what you think!

A quick summary of how things are going to work: The emails will have titles, pictures, brief descriptions of articles, and links to the full articles on the blog. This way, we think it'll be easier for everyone to find information that applies to them or that they're interested in. Today, all that is included in the email are the stories from this week, but old newsletters are available on the school website, and individual announcements are being organized and added to the blog.

It's been a fun and challenging project so far. This is a kind of test run, but we will have even more aspects figured out and improved very soon.

Thank you so much for bearing with us and for staying involved with our school!

Home From Belize
We welcomed back a great group of students and teachers from North Star Charter School (Eagle, Idaho) who just returned from serving in the village of Mahogany Heights, Belize.  The group successfully created educational materials in partnership with Belize students, teachers and community members.  We are so grateful for the students and teachers who are instrumental in this service work and partnership!
Submit Photos for the Yearbook
The yearbook staff would love for you to share pictures you take at sporting events and school activities. Upload your photos to RePlayIt.com under NSCS. Thanks for your help!

We invite you to join our event on Wednesday, November 5, 2014 from 6:30-9:30p at the Basque Center for a great evening of celebrating the work of our service volunteers and experiencing GSP's impact in Belize and America.  We will be featuring Belize auction items and food, as well as live music from Boise's Amuma Says No!

Each admission includes a drink ticket and great music.  Individuals may register at the door.

Fire Safety Presentation
The Eagle Fire Department visited K-5th graders at North Star to teach fire safety. The kids enjoyed their presentation and learned a lot!
Love and Logic - Arguments Between Children
It came from the backseat. It crept up while we were on the phone. It wasn't a monster, but something much more menacing - kids arguing.

Have you noticed that kids pick the worst times to start bickering? Few things can be as annoying or draining for parents. What options do we have when kids argue with each other? How about:
  • Whether we are physically present to hear it or not?
  • How much we charge to listen to it?
  • How we react?
  • What we model?
What statements can we make in these situations to help keep the problem of arguing on the kids' shoulders where that problem belongs? Read More

Fact of Week

Fact guy is pressed for time this week, so he just has some random words to use or not as you wish. If you have wondered why your pet canary got fidgety in the autumn, this may help. At least it will give you a name for it.

·       Zugunruhe is the restlessness of caged birds in the migration season.

·       The French disdain for English created motdièse (or sharp-sign word”) instead of usinghashtag

·       Yawning and stretching at the same time is called Pandiculation

·       Vowel-schmowel: the practice of adding a rhyming word beginning with sch- to another is called “shm-reduplication.”

·       The phrase "you’re toast" was first used by Bill Murray in "Ghostbusters."

·      In Finnish an exclamation mark is a "shout mark"; in Spanish it’s a "wonder symbol."
