Oct. 29 Industry meeting planned-Raiders & Invaders Weekend efforts gain momentum
Members of the tourism and hospitality industry are invited to attend a planning session for the county’s War of 1812 bicentennial event, Raiders & Invaders Weekend, to be held June 6-8, 2014.  The weekend will feature a festival event in Leonardtown, site of the British invasion, on Friday and Saturday; and activities at sites and businesses throughout the county on Sunday.   The event is structured to encourage visitors to stay the weekend while providing opportunities to local businesses.  For more info contact visitus@stmarysmd.com.

 

Economic Development Commission forming, Tourism Industry to be included
The Board of County Commissioners has authorized the establishment of the St. Mary’s County Economic Development Commission (SMCEDC) to guide development and implementation of a comprehensive economic development strategy to broaden the local economy. SMCEDC will be staffed by the County’s Dept. of Economic and Community Development. Ideal candidates will have private industry experience in technology transfer, defense, retail and service, workforce, tourism and agriculture development or related businesses.  Individuals interested in applying for appointment to the board can download the application. Deadline for submission is November 15, 2013, 5:00 p.m.

Robin Finnacom, DECD acting director is visiting tourism-related businesses to gain a better understanding of this important sector of the local economy. St. Mary’s County Tourism partners with MD Office of Tourism for Fall Sweepstakes
Maryland Office of Tourism Development collaborated with St. Mary’s County to produce a fall 2013 Seasonal Sweepstakes.  The promotion was featured on the VisitMaryland.org website, related web and social media channels, in Welcome Centers and in radio spots. Participating partners received brand exposure, plus qualified leads from visitors requesting additional travel partner information. The St. Mary’s County Sweepstakes ran mid-September – mid October on VisitMaryland.org homepage. Partners included:  Ruddy Duck Seafood and Alehouse, Island Inn and Resort, Port of Leonardtown Winery, Historic St. Mary’s City, Inn at Brome Howard and Fish the Bay Charters and Lighthouse Tours.
Changes in Tourism Coordinator's position
SMCT and DECD bid a fond farewell to tourism coordinator Rebecca Lira who decided not to return to work upon the birth of her son Samuel Cesar Lira.  We extend our best wishes and grateful thanks to Rebecca for all she did to promote tourism in St. Mary’s County.  The search to fill the vacated position is underway.  Image:  R Lira with colleagues at office baby shower.
Heritage Area awards Mini-Grant to sites in St. Mary’s County
The Southern Maryland Heritage Area Consortium annual Mini-Grant awards for Fiscal Year 2013 included a grant to Christ Episcopal Church for a sign and a brochure welcoming visitors and describing the effects of the War of 1812 on the church and its parishioners.  The Patuxent River Naval Air Museum Association also received a grant to Improve and update the museum brochure. The mini grant program is part of the consortium’s continuing effort to build the heritage tourism resources of Calvert, Charles and St. Mary’s.  Click here for more info on the Consortium.
 
Chamber of Commerce Tourism Advisory Council takes meeting on the road
The Tourism Advisory Council (TAC) invited tourism and hospitality industry members to its September meeting which was hosted by the Inn at Brome Howard.  During the meeting, Chairperson Beverly Brown, SMC Chamber President Bill Scarafia and members of the council reported on the state of the local industry and discussed ideas as to how to strengthen tourism efforts in the county. Tourism Depts. of Southern Maryland host War of 1812 Media Tour
Ten travel writers from the Mid-Atlantic area and as far away as Pittsburgh visited War of 1812-related sites in St. Mary’s, Calvert and Charles counties for a three-day tour in September.  Sites visited in St. Mary’s included Greenwell State Park, Sotterley Plantation and Tudor Hall, with lunch provided by Café des Artistes in Leonardtown. The trip was part of the larger regional marketing campaign of the three tourism departments and the Southern Maryland Heritage Area consortium. Dignitaries join Kick-Off of Leonardtown Arts & Entertainment District
State tourism and arts officials joined town and county officials and the public on September 6  for “First Friday Focus on the Arts”.  The event included a ceremony celebrating the designation and an, “Art Walk” featuring art on display at local businesses.  A&E designation will give increased exposure and stimulus to the growing arts community centered in the town. Assistant Secretary for Tourism, Film and the Arts visits Pax River Naval Air Museum
Hannah Byron, Maryland’s Assistant Secretary for Tourism, Film and the Arts made a recent visit to the Patuxent River Naval Air Museum where she met with PRNAM’s board of Director’s President Ed Forsman and exhibit committee chairperson Dave Seeman to hear about plans for the new museum. Wedding Planners hold Southern Maryland Caravan
More than twenty members of the Association of Bridal Consultants, MD/DC Chapter participated in an event organized by planner Kim Breedlove and hotelier Beverly Brown which introduced wedding sites in Calvert and St. Mary’s Counties to the group.  Tourism manager Carolyn Laray of St. Mary’s County and tourism director Joyce Baki of Calvert County spoke to the group at lunch at the Hilton Garden Inn Solomons.  Sites visited in St. Mary’s County included Sotterley Plantation, Historic St. Mary’s City and the Inn at Brome Howard.  Image: Wedding planners at Historic St. Mary's City. 
Intern develops sports marketing page for SMCT
Summer intern Kane Roland of Loyola University, is responsible for developing the new sports marketing section of the SMC travel and tourism website.  The section is designed to market our sports facilities to the competitive sports market, serve as a sports resource, provide a calendar of competitive events, and assist visiting sports teams with panning their visits.  As with the recently unveiled wedding pages, the objective is to develop markets which benefit our tourism and hospitality industry.  SMCT extends a heartfelt thank-you to intern Kane.  Click here for the sports pages.  Image: Summer intern Kane Roalnd wtih toursim manager Carolyn Laray and former tourism coordinator Rebecca Lira.
Port of Leonardtown Winery receives prestigious Governor’s Cup awards

Winegrower produces cable show on local wine industry
Charles Beaver of Still Creek Vineyard in Clements, is working with Metrocast to produce an interview program that will introduce viewers to all aspects of the local wine industry.  The pilot was recently shot at Gray Wolf vineyards.  Guests were SMC tourism manager Carolyn Laray and Southern Maryland Agricultural Development Commission director, Christine Bergmark. Image: show producer Charles Baeaver with metrocast film crew.
