General European Highlights

EuCheMS Urges for Action on Climate Change
In the beginning of November, Prof. Rajendra Pachauri from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change presented the results of the IPCC latest Assessment Report at the European Parliament.
On the occasion of this report, EuCheMS has sent a letter to President Schulz and President Juncker urging the Parliament and the Commission to do all in their power to reduce the emissions of greenhouse effect gases in the EU.
In the words of Prof. Pachauri, "We really need action on climate change now", and EuCheMS is certain that chemistry research will significantly contribute to achieve this goal, not only through analysing the current problems but also in finding sustainable answers.

EuCheMS Input to the Public Consultation on Mercury
EuCheMS has submitted to the European Commission its position on the public consultation on the Ratification by the EU of the Minamata Convention on Mercury.
The results of the consultation will be used as input for the preparation of the economic, social and environmental Impact Assessment that will show specific key areas where EU legislation may need to be amended such as: import restrictions for metallic mercury from non-Parties to the Convention; export ban for certain products containing mercury; mercury use in new products and processes; restrictions on certain processes where mercury is used; mercury use in Artisanal and Small-scale Gold Mining (ASGM) and environmentally sound storage of non-waste mercury stocks.

JRC Releases World´s First Certified Mixture of Silica Nanoparticles
For the first time a certified reference material containing silica nanoparticles with a distinct bimodal size distribution has been released by JRC. It has been designed and produced to support the implementation of the nanomaterial definition recommended by the European Commission.
Silica nanoparticles have been widely used in numerous established and promising new applications such as abrasives in polishing slurries, food additives for clarification of beer and wine, and as drug delivery systems. In order to gather evidence on the safety of these new applications, toxicologists can now use this new certified reference materials to gather data on nanoparticles' physico-chemical properties.

Food Contact Materials Expert Network First Meeting
Earlier this month, scientific experts from Member States met in Parma for the first meeting of EFSA’s Food Ingredients and Packaging Network. The experts have gathered to discuss the latest risk assessment activities, approaches and challenges in the area of non-plastic food contact materials.
The meeting agenda covered ongoing activities at European level and approaches used at national level for risk assessment of non-plastic food contact materials such as coatings, printing inks, paper and boards and some metals. The work also included discussion of future challenges expected by Member States in this area and identifying common interests, possible subjects for scientific cooperation and priorities for further work.
EFSA scientific networks of national experts boost cooperation in various areas of EFSA’s work. They provide a platform for discussion and consultation on risk assessment activities and approaches of mutual interest and benefit to EFSA and Member States.

The Erasmus +: Knowledge Alliances and Sector Skills Alliances Partner search tool is an online resource for organisations applying under these actions. The tool helps organisations to identify project partners ahead of submissions for the latest Calls for Proposals.

Public Consultation on Patents and Standards
The European Commission launched a public consultation on patents and standards with the objective of gathering information and views on the interplay between standardisation and intellectual property rights (IPR) such as patents, which are crucial for the EU´s objectives in the areas of industry policy, innovation, services and technological development.
The purpose of this consultation is to allow stakeholders interested in standardisation involving patents, to bring to the Commission's attention their views on
• how the current framework governing standardisation involving patents performs and on
• how it should evolve to ensure that standardization remains efficient and adapted to the fast-changing economic and technological environment.

Workshop on Employability of Chemists & Euromaster MSC Ceremony 2014

The Workshop on Employability of Chemists: Study Progress will focus on discussing the use of innovative educational approaches, improving employment prospects and skill levels of young people and increasing their labour market access and employability, also stimulating entrepreneurial skills of students and academics. An employability survey commissioned by the European Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC) and in cooperation with the European Chemistry Thematic Network Association (ECTN) as well as involving the European Association for Chemical and Molecular Sciences (EuCheMS) is in progress.
