After the terrible events in Melbourne on Friday, many of us are feeling shell-shocked by the devastating loss of life. Even if we are not connected to the event or know someone involved, the era of 24-hour news brings traumatic events directly into everyone’s lives.

This illustrated guide by Lucy Fahey from ABC News, shows how trauma can affect people, especially children, and some strategies for coping. There are also links for further information on how to handle trauma and phone numbers to call if you or someone you know needs support.

Characteristics of people most likely to cut corners at work

New research has found that employees who “cut corners” tend to be morally compromised, low in conscientiousness, self-focused and impulsive. This is in addition to the potential for corner-cutting to increase risks.

The research found approximately one in four employees regularly cut corners. Men are slightly more likely to cut corners than women. So what are the personality traits of corner-cutters and what are the implications for managers? Continue »

How safe is that driver next to you? A trucker’s poor health could increase crash risk

As commuters shimmy past large, lumbering trucks on the road, they may glance over and wonder, “How safe is that driver next to me?” If the truck driver is in poor health, the answer could be: not very. Commercial truck drivers with three or more medical conditions double to quadruple their chance of being in a crash than healthier drivers, reports a new study led by investigators at the University of Utah School of Medicine in the USA.  Continue »
