Headliners give Sunshine Award to Utah lawyer

The Utah Headliners are pleased to announce the 2015 Sunshine Award recipient, David Reymann. David is an attorney at Parr Brown Gee & Loveless where he has tirelessly defended First Amendment issues, working in conjunction with and representing Utah news outlets as well as CNN.

David Reymann, right, accepts the Utah Headliners' Sunshine Award from board member Nate Carlisle at the chapter's annual banquet.
Over the years, David has manned Utah’s Freedom of Information hotline (1-800-574-4546), which provides real-time assistance to Utahns at no cost.  David helped litigate Deseret News v. Salt Lake County, which yielded the most important Utah Supreme Court decision to date in favor of access to public records.  David was on the front lines through a five-year battle that ended with the High court affirming the importance of GRAMA, Utah’s Government Records Access Management Act, and established that government records are presumptively public.
For the past several years, David has advocated for opening Utah courts to video cameras and helped draft 4-101.01, the rule adopted by the judicial system allowing for electronic media coverage in courtrooms.  When the rule was altered to exclude family court proceedings with no notice and without public comment, David marshalled the support of Utah media and petitioned the state’s judicial council to reconsider.  A public comment period was granted and a rule restoring the presumption of open to family law cases was drafted and was this month approved by the judiciary. Domestic law cases will be opened up again to video cameras effective this November. David also helped write this rule.

Utah journalism has a friend in David and we are pleased to have him on the side of open records. Congratulations to David Reymann, the 2015 honoree of the Sunshine Award.
