A Message from the Director (August 16, 2018)

The year began with the sad news of the passing of one of the founding members of our Program — Lawrence E. Stager, formerly Dorot Professor of the Archaeology of Israel at Harvard, and Director of the Harvard Semitic Museum.  His life and accomplishments were honored in a memorial event that took place on Friday, April 27, at the Harvard-Yenching Institute.  Larry played an important role in establishing our Program, in setting its goals, and in guiding its development.  He will be greatly missed by his colleagues, including all of us on the White-Levy Board, as we continue the important program of targeted support for archaeological publications that he helped to shape.
In 2018, the White-Levy Program maintained its focus on supporting projects in recently troubled areas, offering grants to researchers at sites in Syria, Iraq, and Afghanistan.  Funding was also awarded to a selection of other worthy projects in Greece, Sudan, Jordan, Iran, Georgia, and Turkmenistan.  Eleven awards were made in total: the full list of sites and grantees is given below.  More information on the individual projects may be accessed by clicking on the links to the “profile pages” on the White-Levy website
