Federal Update:
ESEA Reauthorization,"Every Child Achieves Act"
Thanks to your efforts to educate members of Congress, the 21st Century Community Learning Centers (21st CCLCs) program avoided elimination in the U.S. Senate bill that will reauthorize the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), titled "Every Child Achieves Act"!
Earlier this month, the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) committee, which Senator Isakson is a member of, began their consideration of the bill and the nearly 90 amendments and unanimously voted to pass the 21st CCLC amendment! The bipartisan reauthoization bill also passed the Senate HELP Committee unanimously. The bill will still have to be voted on by the full Senate and will have to go through the House, but this is fantastic progress!
Make sure to thank Senator Isakson for his support for afterschool programs, as well as his leadership on early education (more information on Senator Isakson's early education amendment can be found here).
*More information on afterschool in the ESEA reauthoization process can be found on GSAN's blog.

Two Minute Advocacy Ask
The Ask: Call Senator Johnny Isakson and thank him, as a member of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions committee, for his leadership on the HELP committee and his support for early education and afterschool programs addressed in the committee’s reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA).
The Why: Maintaining the 21st CCLC program in the ESEA reauthorization will help to ensure that thousands of Georgia’s young people have a safe and enriching place to go after the school day ends and in the summer. We have long known that early childhood is the foundation for a successful education – the addition of the early childhood amendment into ESEA highlights this and will help Georgia to strengthen existing programs. These amendments both provide and strengthen essential learning opportunities that level the playing field and help young people across Georgia better prepare for college, careers, and life.
The Message: "Thank you for your leadership on the HELP committee and especially for your support for early education and afterschool programs in the reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act and those amendments. Such work can really make a difference for Georgia’s children.â€
