Support the Summer Meals Act
The Ask: Reach out to your Congressmen and ask them to support the bipartisan Summer Meals Act of 2015 (S.613/H.1728) to make sure that none of Georgia’s children go hungry over the summer!
The Why: The Summer Food Service Program helps ensure that children and youth in low-income areas continue to receive free, nutritious meals when school is out of session and often provide educational or enrichment opportunities. Many low-income children in Georgia, however, do not participate in the program due to administrative, transportation, and outreach barriers.
As Congress prepares to review the Child Nutrition Act (last reauthorized as the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010), which expired on September 30, 2015, advocates hope the Summer Meals Act will be included as an important piece of the new legislation to improve access to summer meals.
The Message: Please support the Summer Meals Act of 2015 (S.613/H.1728). Only one out of every seven children who receive free and reduced lunch during the school year in Georgia receives meals in the summer through Summer Nutrition Programs. The Summer Meals Act would help ensure that none of Georgia's children ever have to go hungry. Thank you for giving children priority as you represent Georgia in the U.S. Congress.
