Help Save Our Sidewalks

The campaign to Save Our Sidewalks by passing Measure P1 is spinning along, as you may have noticed from the yard signs around town. The endorsements have been pouring in as well.

Help is still needed though, as evidenced by a recent dialog regarding the measure on NextDoor. If you have a yard and have not asked for a sign, please ask here for the sign fairy to install one.

There are also stories of people's misfortunes due to poor sidewalk conditions here. The most terrible story is not up on the site yet because AS&R just heard it. Gail Smith, the owner of Toy Go Round, tripped on a damaged sidewalk on Solano Avenue five years ago. The impact shattered many of her teeth. Two fell out shortly after and another three have fallen out since. The resulting dental work has cost her $30,000 so far.

Vote Yes on P1 to put Pedestrians 1st. And please donate, even a small amount, to the campaign to help with the costs of signs, the web site, handouts, mailers, etc.

AS&R Happy Hour

Tonight (Thursday, October 27)  |  5:00 - 7:00 pm
@ Little Star Pizza, 1181 Solano Ave.

Got a gripe, question or idea that would make cycling or walking better? Hungry or thirsty?

Join us for our happy hour at Little Star Pizza – yes, they have plenty of bike parking now! This is our every other month (even-numbered months) informal get-together to talk about all things bike and ped in Albany. It’s a good chance to ask about what the city is up to and what our stance on issues is, and to meet others who are interested in issues related to human-scale transit/active transit.

Traffic and Safety Commission

Tonight (Thursday, October 27)  |  7:00 - ? pm
@ City Council Chambers, 1000 San Pablo Ave.

It is not sexy, but it is where your strolling and rolling conditions in Albany get defined: the Traffic and Safety Commission. The meeting this month is no exception. Staff will provide an update on whether the City will use grant funding it has received to finally plan the Kains and Adams bike boulevards, or whether it is going to give back the money due to lack of staff resources to manage the project.

Also on the agenda is motorist calming for Brighton Avenue. As AS&R has come to expect, the plans have various problems, including sharrows too close the curb and stop and other signs not in the previously agreed locations.

The full agenda is available here.

Urban Cycling 101 Classroom Workshop

@Room 209, Dwinelle Hall, UC Berkeley

Want to ride more but don’t feel confident enough?

Here’s a FREE bicycle skills class RIGHT IN OUR BACKYARD, courtesy of Bike East Bay!

Learn basic rules of the road, how to share the road with cars on busy streets, how to equip your bicycle, lock your bike, fit your helmet, and avoid crashes by riding predictably, visibly, and communicating with other road users by your actions and signals. Every workshop has the same content so you only need to attend once. For adults and teens, no bike needed.
(Please note: All of Bike East Bay’s UC Berkeley classes are open to the public, but are also part of the BEST (Bicycle Education & Safety Training) program allowing ticketed cyclists to have their fines reduced.)

Class is FREE but it is mandatory to register here.

Volunteer Opportunity:
Greenway Art Committee

Art is coming to the Ohlone Greenway, and you can help select it

The Ohlone Greenway is Albany's active transportation highway, with more people rolling and strolling it than any other route. It is also the most used park in the City, a surprise finding of a parks survey years ago. The City has embarked on design of various upgrades to the park aspect of the Greenway, including locations for rotating art installations. The City is seeking artists, art professionals and Albany residents to volunteer to serve on a selection panel to review public art submissions for those locaitons. The role of the selection panel is to make specific recommendations about design options and artist selection to the Arts Committee. For more information and application go here.

As usual, Pennie & Chrystal across the street at Gathering Tribes keep a watchful eye and will be happy to see you pumping up your tires soon!
