The Challengers added two wins against the Luzern Eagles on Sunday, June 23 at the Heerenschürli. But the C's had to fight till the very end, to secure the wins, as they posted a 4-3 victory in 12 innings in Game 1, followed by a 3-2 success in Game 2.

LADIES PLAY STRONG, BUT END WITH LOSS

The Softball-Team fell to the Barracudas for a third straight time in Tuesday night's 2-1 loss at Rümlang. And it was kind of a déjà-vu for the Challengers.

As in Game 2 on Sunday the C's opened the score in the first frame, as Karen Heimgartner led off with a single and scored later on a passed ball. But again that was all for the C's. The Barracudas tied the game in the bottom of the second inning at 1-1 and their starting pitcher Misty Flesher helped herself to get the win, as she broke the tie with a RBI-single in the sixth inning to make it 2-1, spoiling Challengers pitcher Macy Morgan's great start.

The Challengers battled till the end and loadad the bases for the second time of the game, but the Barracudas escaped the seventh-inning jam.

The two teams will meet again on Thursday night at 7 pm at the Klopstockwiese in Zürich.

The U15-Cadets travelled to Geneva on Saturday, June 22 to face the Geneva Baseball Team and the Thun Hunters. As one week before the SG TruckStar/Challengers were given the win despite losing the game on the field, as Geneva again had no Swiss pitcher in its line-up. On the field the SG was able to keep pace with Geneva for one inning only, before the host put things out of reach for a final score of 23-5. In Game 2 the Thun Hunters posted a 12-3 victory over the SG TruckStar/Challengers.

The SG TruckStar/Challengers finished the preeliminary round in fourth place in the Western Division with a 4-6 record. The SG will face the SG Rainbows/Lions/Bandits in a two-game series for seventh place on September 15.
JUVENILES OUTWALK BERN, LOSE TO UNICORNS

The Juveniles had to face a difficult task last Sunday, as they had to play the two teams in their group that handed them their two losses in the season. But with patience at the plate they achieved a sensational 16-12 victory over the Cardinals/Hunters/Frogs. In the second game of the day, they had no chance against excellent Uniconrs pitching and lost 11-1.

In game 1, pitcher Jayfry Meier recorded 6 Strikeouts for his second win of the season. But a decisive part played the hitters who rarely swung at bad pitches, earning a total of 20 base on balls. Meier and rookie Bastian Kämpfer reached base with walks in all of their plate appearances and scored 9 of the 16 runs.

The Challengers/Truck Star grabbed the lead in the first inning on and never looked back. T-baller Felix Pfrimmer lead the offense with 6 RBI's, while Jessey Gadient ended the game with just a single pitch for the first save of his career.

While the Cardinals/Hunters/Frogs scored more than half their runs on hit balls, the Cha/Tru reached home most on passed balls or wild pitches. in that matter, they suffered an awkward situation, when one of Meier's pitches, for ball four, rolled to the deep backstop and vanished in the high grass. Catcher Kämpfer desperately tried to find the ball, but could only come up with it when the batter-runner had hustled around the diamond and scored.

In game 2, wild pitches und passed balls were also for the opponents the primary way of scoring, as 7 runners crossed the plate in such situations.

Starting pitcher Nolan Thommen struck out 2 but did not have his best day, while also not getting defensive support. In his two innings of work the Cha/Tru commited 4 Errors.

In the second inning occurred a defensive highlight, though, when shortstop Meier completed an unassisted double play after a linout.

Thommen was relieved in the third inning by Gadient who struck out 3 but had to concede 4 more runs.

The offense, meanwhile, struggled with the Unicorn's outstanding pitching. But althouth the pitches came faster than usual, the Cha/Tru struck out only three times and put the ball in play over and over again.

Rintaro Onishi, Kämpfer and Thommen delivered a nice hit each and Thommen scored the sole run for the Cha/Tru in the third inning after, of course, a wild pitch.

JOE HASTY IN SWITZERLAND
Wednesday June 16, 2013 - by Werner Zingg
The Challengers Team of 1990
