BEEBA BOYS

Best known for her philosophical and provocative work with films like Midnight's Children or Water, Beeba Boys marks a huge departure for Deepa in that it's her version of The Departed meets Scarface. - Lainey Gossip

Mix bhangra beats, AK-47s, bespoke suits, and cocaine and you have BEEBA BOYS, an explosive clash of culture and crime. Jeet Johar and his crew of young, charismatic men vie to take over the Vancouver drug and arms scene in this ball-to-the-wall action drama. Blood is spilled, heads are cracked, hearts are broken and family bonds are pushed to the brink in this adrenaline charged glimpse into a Sikh Indo gang war. If you wanna be seen, you gotta commit to being seen. Go hard or go home.

THE AMINA PROFILE

Amina Arraf, a pretty Syrian-American revolutionary who’s having an online affair with Montrealer Sandra Bagaria, launches the provocatively named blog A Gay Girl in Damascus. As the Syrian uprising gains momentum, the blog attracts a huge following. But it’s Amina’s subsequent abduction that sparks an international outcry to free her.Telling a detective story that involves various intelligence agencies and global media empires, the film travels from San Francisco and Washington to Istanbul, Tel Aviv and Beirut to meet the key players in this quest to reveal the real Amina. This thoroughly modern tale of technology, love and news-as-spectacle questions the ways in which people connect in today’s virtual world. The Amina Profile is part love story, part international thriller, and a gripping chronicle of an unprecedented media and sociological hoax.

Filmmaker Sophie Desraspe creates a hypersexualized tableau and follows Sandra from Montreal to Istanbul to Tel Aviv to Chicago to reconstruct and unravel a fascinating love story-cum-political thriller. Amina is truly a tale of our times—one that starts and is solved via the Internet—and brings into question the ethics, accountability, and very human consequences surrounding it.
