Rob Atkins is a Vancouver-based photographer specializing in architecture, interior and fine art. Since beginning his career in New York in the 1980s, his work has been used by an international array of clients.
In the fall of 2019 Glitterati Editions will release Rob’s second book, Earth River Sky - a collection of a decade of photography made in northern New Mexico.
Diving along the endless highways and roads of the American southwest, I feel at times as if the car’s windshield has transformed into a large screen in a movie theater. An endless montage of signage, many from a long-gone, less homogenized, and nationally-branded era stream past, guideposts to an America that now exists mostly as a memory.
I always traveled alone, which made these trips a spiritual experience, much like my own private Santiago de Compostela pilgrimage. In that sense, the “journey” of creating these images was as much one across the physical landscape as it was an interior transit.
In the words of John Steinbeck: “We do not take a trip, a trip takes us.”
