When is a  cardboard box not a cardboard box?
...When it's a work of art. This exciting collaboration with D_LAB (Derbyshire's digital arts project) will culminate in a showing of work on Saturday 4th March at People Express. Open to the public, this will be a chance to explore a Theatre D'ombre installation made by young people during a residency in October, working alongside artist Jennifer Booth. Our building will be open to view the work from 3pm on the day. If you would like to come along, please contact us on 01283 559262.
Exciting journeys through culture
We have been awarded funding from The Big Lottery Celebrate fund to work with young producers. Through the project 'Around The World in 5 Days' (ATW5) a diverse steering group of young people will curate their own festival, exploring different cultures and art forms from around the world. If you are a young person (aged 13-19 years) that would like to apply for a place on the steering group, or you know a young future festival curator get in touch - hema.mistry@people-express.org.uk
Who said autism and creativity don't go hand in hand?
People Express have successfully supported The Swadlincote Aspergers Society to secure funding from the Big Lottery Fund to continue their creative project. The Even BIGGER Welcome Cafe will provide the opportunity for vulnerable adults to work alongside professional artists to create their own work, leading to four exhibitions held at People Express throughout 2017. Feeling good, saying farewell..
On a wet Wednesday night in February, a group of young performers braved the winter weather to stage a promenade style performance in and around the People Express building in Swadlincote. Audience of family and friends joined the ensemble to watch and celebrate the new work, devised entirely by the performers themselves.
Following on from weekly after school workshops, the group attended a three day residency, to transform the building into a performance space, making our hallway into an enchanted forest, our stairway into a fiery lair and our upstairs workshop into a television news studio.
This residency marks the end of the two year project, and was a great way to celebrate the achievements of these wonderful young artists.
