Weekly Update for April 27, 2022

THE MINISTRY OF ANGELS

Angels are busy! They don’t sit around relaxing all day. The Bible tell us angels have an active ministry both in heaven and on earth. Here are a few of the ministries the Bible tells us that angels have.
Angels worship and serve God in heaven. The prophet Daniel saw a vision of angels worshipping and serving God in heaven. Daniel saw God sitting on his throne and “millions of angels ministered to him; many millions stood to attend him” (Daniel 7:10, NLT).
Angels execute God’s judgement on unbelievers. Angels worship God but also execute God’s judgment. An example of this was when the nation of Assyria said they were going to conquer and destroy the nation of Judah (2 Kings 18:19-37; 19:10-13
). Yet, God had a different plan and sent the angel of the Lord to the Assyrian camp and killed 185,000 soldiers (2 Kings 19:35). While angels execute divine judgment on unbelievers, they also give encouraging words and instruction to believers.
Angels provide announcement and instruction to believers. The most important announcements by angels were about Jesus Christ. Angels described his birth (Luke 1:26-33
), directed his escape to Egypt (Matthew 2:13, 19), took care of him after his temptation (Matthew 4:11), strengthened him in Gethsemane before his trial (Luke 22:43), described his resurrection (Matthew 28:2, 6), and ascension (Acts 1:10-11). Angels also provided instruction to believers. The Law (referring to the books of Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy) was given to Moses by angels (Acts 7:53; GAlatians 3:19; Hebrews 2:2). A ministry of in the book of Revelation was to explain mysteries (Revelation 17:7). Additionally, angels revealed the Gospel (Galatians 1:8).
Angels protect and care for believers. This is done in two ways. One is through guardian angels. When Jesus was teaching about the kingdom of heaven and who would be the greatest he told the disciples, “Beware that you don’t look down on any of these little ones [referring to children]. For I tell you that in heaven their angels are always in the presence of my heavenly Father” (Matthew 18:10, NLT
). This verse tells us that children have guardian angels. Another way angels protect and care for believers is after death. Luke tells the story of a rich man and Lazarus and where each of them go when they die. Luke begins the story explaining that both the rich man and Lazarus died, and Lazarus’ body was “carried by the angels to be with Abraham” (Luke 16:22). With that said, angels minister by caring for believers through guardian angels on earth and care for believers after death.
When angels are not busy worshipping God in heaven we can be comforted knowing that angels are near us and with us. They watch over us, guard us, protect us and guide us.
