Weekly Update for May 4, 2022

Satan was one of God’s angels but now is God’s enemy. Satan is our enemy too. Let’s take a look at what the Bible says about Satan and his fall from heaven.
As one of God’s angels, Satan was prideful and envious of God. Isaiah 14 describes the “sin of Satan” and how he actively rebelled against God. “How you are fallen from heaven, O shining star, son of the morning! You have been thrown down to the earth, you who destroyed the nations of the world. For you said to yourself, ‘I will ascend to heaven and set my throne above God’s stars. I will preside on the mountain of the gods far away in the north. I will climb to the highest heavens and be like the Most High.’” (Isaiah 14:12-14, NLT).
Notice the prideful “I will” statements in this passage. “I will ascend to heaven and set my throne above God’s stars” (v. 13). Satan wanted to be mightier and more powerful than God. “I will preside on the mountain of the gods far away in the north” (v. 13). Satan wanted to be “the man” in charge. “I will climb to the highest heavens and be like the Most High” (v. 14). Satan wanted more power and influence than what God had granted him. Pride and envy led to Satan’s eviction from heaven.
God shared with Ezekiel what God spoke to Satan after his fall from heaven. “Your rich commerce led you to violence, and you sinned. So I banished you in disgrace from the mountain of God. I expelled you, O mighty guardian, from your place among the stones of fire. Your heart was filled with pride because of all your beauty. Your wisdom was corrupted by your love of splendor. So I threw you to the ground and exposed you to the curious gaze of kings.” (Ezekiel 28:15-17, NLT).
These verses describe the fall of Satan from heaven and the relationship Satan lost with God. Because of Satan’s “violence” and “sin,” God banished and expelled him from heaven (v. 16). He was “filled with pride” and “corrupted” which is why God threw him to earth (v. 17). The “many sins” of Satan led to God sending him away (v. 18). Satan’s own decisions and corruption led to him being banished from God.
Revelation 12 describes a war in heaven in which Michael and his angels will fight against Satan and his angels (Rev 12:7). In the passage in Revelation 12 the apostle John heard a loud voice from heaven say, “The accuser [Satan] of our brothers and sisters has been thrown down to earth-the one who accuses them from before our God day and night (v. 10) . . . for the devil has come down to you in great anger (v. 12).”
Satan was one of God’s angels enjoying fellowship with God. Yet his pride, envy, and desire for power led God to banish him from heaven. As Christians, let’s not be like Satan who was full of pride, envy, and desire for power. Instead, let’s focus on enjoying the relationship we have with God and worship Him.
