The Benefits of Energy Modeling
When construction begins on commercial spaces, models and plans are constantly consulted in the decision making process. What tends to be underutilised however, is the energy model. These models, created using specialized software, can go a long way in helping out those early phases of construction. In this article, we'll discuss the benefits of the energy modeling.
Building Efficiency

The primary benefit of energy modeling is the ability to achieve optimal efficiency, starting in the early stages of the build. Energy products and solutions are usually looked at and selected on an individual basis. For example, an RTU HVAC system is selected due to key parameters such as building size and occupancy. What isn't considered however, is how all of the energy products and solutions interact with each other. This is only possible through energy modeling.

Cost Savings

This optimisation leads the next big benefit - cost savings. These cost savings start in the very early stages of the design process. Using modeling, designers might discover that the RTU they selected is too large when considering how the system interacts with other energy components throughout the entire building. This information could mean a more cost effective unit could be selected without sacrificing indoor comfort or system capability. It is fair to say that in the long run, the utilisation of an energy model can truly pay for itself.

Better Decision Making

The ability to optimise energy solutions also means it is a great decision making tool for both designers and owners. Both of these parties can simulate various energy solutions and determine what solution will lead to the highest efficiency and indoor comfort. The ability to predict regular energy costs will also aid owners in planning how they will utilise the building, long before it is completed.

Easier Access

While we have seen that energy modeling can save money, the cost of producing and utilising this tool has also become much more reasonable. Before the advent of computer software, energy modelling was an incredibly time consuming task. Now, relatively simple energy models are possible for large and small commercial projects alike. Software has also made the tool quite versatile, as energy models can also be created to examine energy solutions in existing buildings.
We live in a world where energy savings are becoming an increasing concern, not only for cost saving reasons but environmental ones as well. It is in a commercial builders best interest to utilise every tool possible to truly optimise commercial spaces. Energy models are one of these important tools that shouldn't be overlooked, especially considering the many benefits they provide.

News Insights

The global market for energy-efficient technologies used in building applications is expected to increase to $295.9 billion in 2016, and grow further to $462.6 billion by 2021, a CAGR of 9.3% over the next five years.

Increased concerns about the environment and CO2 emissions, along with trends toward increasing energy independence, are fuelling growth for renewable energy and energy-efficient technologies.

In its new report, BCC Research reveals that these technologies, particularly those used in building applications, are undergoing big growth due to government-sponsored initiatives, new regulations, and multiple financial incentives.

The report provides a detailed review of the global market for technologies used in the manufacture and use of renewable energy and energy-efficient technologies in building applications.

It analyses technologies for heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning (HVAC), energy-efficient lighting, and smart meters.
