GABC meets with the Minister

Members of the GABC meet with the Minister for Regional Development.
The GEDC recently hosted a meet and greet with the Minister for Regional Development, the Hon Alannah MacTiernan MLC, and the Goldfields Aboriginal Business Chamber (GABC).
The Minister heard first hand from business leaders about key issues and future opportunities in the Goldfields.
GABC Co-Vice Chair Judd Harris spoke about the collective strength of the Chamber representing Aboriginal business in the region and future steps to provide access to greater economic participation for Aboriginal people.
Aboriginal businesses interested in joining the GABC and partner organisations, individuals and sponsors seeking to support the work of the organisation can visit the GABC website to learn more.

Diggers and Dealers

This year’s Diggers and Dealers Mining Forum 2021 offered a fantastic program and packed event once again.
Celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, Diggers and Dealers is an outstanding annual opportunity to showcase what the region has to offer.
GEDC Board members and staff joined the conference, including Senior Regional Development Officer Regan Brewer, Local Content Adviser Peter Rampellini, and Board Chair Sabina Shugg, pictured.  
They heard from several of our key regional mining operators and major projects, including Lynas Rare Earths Ltd, IGO Ltd and AngloGold Ashanti Australia as well as catching up with key partners from CRC TiME, Goldfields Aboriginal Business Chamber and the WA School of Mines.

Industrial Lands Steering Committee visit

GEDC joined the members of the Industrial Lands Steering Committee (ILSC) for their recent meeting in Kalgoorlie-Boulder last week, followed by a stakeholder lunch and site visits.
The ILSC is part of the Industry Land Authority; a State Government authority that encourages economic growth and development of land for strategic, general, and light industrial use across the state.
The ILSC met with a range of key stakeholders during the visit including the Goldfields CME, KBCCI, local real estate agents, SMEs and local governments.

Planning Reform Forum

Planning Reform Phase 2 - have your say forum
The State Government is reforming Western Australia’s planning system to make it more transparent, consistent and to reduce unnecessary ‘red tape’.
GEDC staff attended a consultation forum in Kalgoorlie on 30 July 2021 hosted by the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Planning, Jessica Stojkovski MLA, to learn more about the proposed reforms.
Participants at the forum also had an opportunity to suggest their own ideas on what could, or should, be done to improve and simplify the planning system and ultimately create great places for people.

YMCA WA recruiting for Early Learning Centre

The high demand for childcare in Kalgoorlie-Boulder will be eased with an increase of 92 new childcare places at a new early learning centre operated by YMCA WA.
Opening in November 2021, the eagerly awaited new facility will offer flexible bookings and innovative solutions to accommodate kindergarten rosters and shiftwork families.
YMCA WA is seeking to recruit 14 childcare and early learning educators across a variety of roles at the centre.
Interested families can connect to the YMCA Early Learning Centres’ Facebook page for information about enrolments and positions.

The Department of Finance is calling for suitable organisations to supply Dental Instruments and Minor Equipment for Dental Health Services across all regions of Western Australia, including Goldfields-Esperance. Applications close 8 September 2021.

Events, Workshops & Training

Doing Business with Government Workshop

Procurement PLUS director John Filippone is holding a free workshop on assisting regional businesses to sell and supply to State Government agencies. The workshop covers both policy and process, including a practical case study, and will provide attendees with access to three months’ free government procurement consultation with the presenter. The workshop is being held at the KBCCI on 12 August 2021. Registrations essential.

My Community Directory

WA Primary Health Alliance (WAPHA) has partnered with My Community Directory to develop and promote the WA Community Directory, a free online resource available for the community and service providers. The directory offers information on available services, upcoming events and employment and training in an accessible format.

Regional Flights Survey

The State Government has invited households in Esperance, Kalgoorlie, Laverton and Leonora to participate in an online survey about airfares and air travel within WA. Residents who complete the Painted Dog Research survey will be offered a spot in a draw to win a share of $1,500 in prizes. Invitations were sent via mail. The survey is open until 15 August 2021.

Funding Opportunities

Local Jobs Program National Priority Fund 2021-2025

Expressions of Interest are sought for innovative projects that complement job creation and/or address structural or other barriers to attraction, recruitment and retention of Australian job seekers and workers. Funding is available from $50,000 to $1 million for eligible submissions. Submissions close 16 August 2021.

FRRR ABC Heywire Youth Innovation Grants

FRRR and donor partners have collaborated with ABC Heywire to help communities take action on the ideas generated by young Australians who attend the annual Heywire Regional Youth Summit. Grants up to $10,000 are available for communities to adopt, adapt and act on one of the five ideas. Applications close 19 August 2021.

Carbon Farming and Land Restoration Program

The State Government is requesting Expressions of Interest from farmers for its $15 million Carbon Farming and Land Restoration Program. Two streams are available: ACCU Plus and Future Carbon. ACCU Plus A Vegetation Projects and Future Carbon close on 20 August 2021, but the deadline for ACCU Plus A and B Soil Carbon Projects has been extended to 1 October 2021.
