AIMC
July - August 2015

Notes from the President

Dear members and friends of AIMC,

I am pleased to take this opportunity to inform you about the latest updates related to upcoming AIMC events.

1. RavennaMosaico, Opere dal Mondo- Architettura e Mosaico Contests

RavennaMosaico First International Contemporary Mosaic Festival, 4th Edition

 October 10 – November 8, 2015
 http://www.ravennamosaico.it/eng/Home

On the 11th and 12th of June, 2015, at the meeting hall in Palazzo Rasponi dalle Teste in Piazza Kennedy (Ravenna), the committee met to select the works which will compete in the “Works from the World” and “Mosaic and Architecture”  sections during the RavennaMosaico Festival.  The committee was composed of Maria Rita Bentini, Rosetta Berardi, Silvia Colizzi, Linda Kniffitz, Maria Grazia Marini, Felice Nittolo, Almuth Schöps and Nikos Tolis.

I would like to thank all of our AIMC members for the high number of participants (111 candidates for the “Works of the World” section and 6 for the “Mosaic and Architecture” section).  I especially appreciate the high artistic quality of the submitted works; it was considered the best group so far, compared with previous editions.  This made  the final selection of those to be exhibited, extremely difficult.

For the exhibition “Works from the World”, the works of the following members have been selected:

The committee regretfully decided not to proceed with the ”Mosaic and Architecture” section, after careful consideration of the few photographic projects presented, due to the lack of suitable material for the preparation of a photographic exhibition.

I extend my personal regret with regard to works not selected.  This can be compensated by the opportunity given to all AIMC members to present their work at the international exhibition, which will take place from May 18-22, 2016 during the next International AIMC Congress in Spilimbergo.

2. XV International AIMC Congress:
 May 18 - 21, 2016 Spilimbergo - Italy

The specific details for participants concerning accommodations, the associated costs, and means of arrival and departure to and from the Congress events are in the final phase of preparation and will be communicated soon.

For now, you may contact the organizers at the following email address for more information: info@scuolamosaicistifriuli.it

Please click here for the Congress program.

3. Premio AIMC Studenti (PAS) AIMC PRIZE FOR STUDENTS

The submission for the PAS competition for young students is still open. The  deadline for submitting proposals  is July 31, 2015. The interest expressed and the applications received so far guarantee the success of this initiative, promoted for the first time by our Association.

Participation is free of any fees. Please click here for details concerning the PAS contest.

We look forward to your joining in these special events!

BIBLIOMOSAICO

Libri d’artista in tessere musive

August 8 - September 8, 2015

Festival Internazionale del Mosaico, Obernai, Francia

Artists involved:  Karen Ami - Henry Noël Aubry - Gérard Brand - Sara Calfapietra – Silvia Casavecchia - Silvana Costa - Sophie Drouin - Giovanna Galli - Néstor Garramone - Sue Giannotti - Samantha Holmes - Pamela Irving - Sonia King - Toyoharu Kii - Artemis Klitsi - Pavlos Mavromatidis - Luciana Notturni - Matteo Randi - Sabine Schuele - Giovanna Tinnirello Sammito - Nikos Tolis - Stefano Mazzotti - Julie Richey - Verdiano Marzi - Matylde Trawcescka - Kazumi Kurihara - Kina Bogdanova - Felice Nittolo - Giuliano Babini - Valeria Ercolani - Arianna Gallo - Renée Malaval - Mélanie Lanoë - Atsou Suzumura - Elisa Simoni - Salvatore Sebaste - Teresa Pollidoro - Fernanda Tollemeto - Silvia Naddeo - Luca Barberini.

This exhibition is the brainchild of Bibliomosaico Rosetta Berardi, whose intention is to stimulate a reflection on the form of the book, on the representation of an object "book", which begs to be watched and read; a book "no book"; a "book object"; a book that despite having lost its content of words, has gained its own specific conceptual meaning of open work. It is an exercise in creativity which communicates, through the language of the mosaic, its own free expressive independence. This is not the book that becomes a work, but work that becomes or recalls the book.

Felice Nittolo

Felice Nittolo - Guest of Honor
at the 7th Biennale of Contemporary Mosaic Obernai

August 8 - September 6, 2015
Opening Saturday, August 8, at 11:00 a.m.
Cour Athic, Obernai, France

".... And for the love of mosaic, for the love of the poetry of the mosaics of Ravenna in particular, forty-five years ago, Felice Nittolo left his hometown Capriglia Irpina, Naples, to settle in the capital of mosaic and become a Ravennato, where the mosaic continued to seduce him, until it swallowed him completely. As some accede to religion, Felice Nittolo acceded to mosaic; mosaic has become his life. He teaches mosaic at the Art Institute. He writes about mosaic. He publishes papers on mosaic sharing his findings on the origins of the resurgence of mosaic in the last century in Ravenna and also publishes the only works available covering the great 20th Century masters of mosaic in Ravenna. He is curator of exhibitions in Ravenna where he opened the NiArt Gallery, Piazza Anastagi.  NiArt Gallery is a place that - through many events - gave visibility to young artists who came from all over the world to study in Ravenna with the "After" project, which evolved from 1991 to 2001.

For the breadth of his work, for the relevance of his approach, Felice Nittolo is a singular artist. "Singularity is subversive," wrote Edmond Jabès. An artist who chooses the language of mosaic can be subversive? Or is the mosaic subversive by nature, because each tessera exists only for its singularity, its uniqueness, its difference in shape, cut, nature, inclination, and light compared to its neighbor one, and each element transmits its uniqueness to the whole? " . . .    - Renee Malaval

Andamento

June 5 - August 2, 2015

Bundoora Homestead Art Centre, Melbourne, Australia
  • Rachel Bremner
  • Cetta Pilati
  • Bev Plowman
  • Mikiah Nguyen (Orsoni 2014 Grand Prize winner)
  • Donna Broadbent
Curator: Fiona Tettman

Andamento brings together five artists who work in the mosaic medium. Each of these artists uses ancient techniques together with traditional and non-traditional materials to reveal the andamento: the rhythm and visual flow of the work. The mosaic medium is tactile and emotive, with each piece of tesserae cut and placed by hand. As the process evolves, elements are imprinted with ideas, emotions and deliberations. The investment of the artist’s personality and the intimate connection it forms with the viewer makes these works unique.

CAN YOU SEE?

May 9 – November 22, 2015

Biennale di Venezia 2015

Egyptian Pavilion

The word PEACE is a mosaic of 5 letters built in a space of 19 meters wide, 8 meters deep and 2.5 meters high. Walking through this mosaic of letters, one cannot see the word PEACE without looking from high above. The visitor will walk through this mosaic of letters without really recognising the whole scene of the word PEACE that he is moving through. Just like everyday life, one is so closely engaged in his particular problem that he/she does not see the “bigger picture”. Similar to mosaic art in general, one can only see the beauty of the mosaic art when seen from afar. This art installation represents a conceptual contemporary mosaic setting using material such as grass, wood and interactive augmented reality to convey the message of PEACE.
