AIMC
April 2015

Happy Easter!

Tile mosaic with rabbit, lizard and mushroom.  From the Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY

In this newsletter we will share with you both sad and happy news.

The happy news is that our Edda Mally was conferred with the
Grand Decoration of Honour of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Austria; the ceremony took place on March 3, 2015. We are all very proud and happy for her!

And now the sad news:
Vanessa Somers Vreeland, UK mosaic artist and long-time AIMC member, passed away recently. We were informed of this very sad news by her beloved husband Freck (Frederick) Vreeland. Vanessa, a sensitive mosaicist, teacher and mosaic lecturer, was a constant and ardent participant in AIMC activities. She divided her time between travelling, lecturing, exhibiting in various countries, and creating mosaics in Marrakech and Rome. You can see some  of her work at www.vanessasomers.com and hear her being interviewed by George Fishman on the occasion of the 12th AIMC congress in Athens, 2010, at: http://mosaicofart.com/welcome/recent-events/aimc-conference-in-greece/vanessa-vreeland-on-mosaic-.html

       Green Eye

We will miss her elegance and sensitivity.

                                                                   Eventide II
 Intimists
Solo Exhibition of Elaine M. Goodwin
March 3 - March 24, 2015

From the artist:
This exhibition explores art as an act of love. In the work of the late 19th and early 20th Century, the ʻIntimisteʼ painters - Pierre Bonnard and Edouard Vuillard - used a broken-colour technique to capture the light and atmosphere of an intimate and fleeting moment. In this exhibition of new work - intimacy is explored in broken and low tones using the light=emitting materials of Ravenna glass and Venetian golds. The works are like confidences shared.
