BCCC Hasler 2022

Thank you one and all for those that participated in the 2022 BCCC Hasler Race. Whether you were a last minute participant or a reluctant volunteer, you all made a difference and contributed to what was a very successful (and profitable) day for the club.

It is the first time in almost three years that the club has run our Hasler, for obvious reasons. We were also using a new British Canoeing entry system for the first time. We had our little issues to deal with along the course of the day and we will make some minor adjustments for next year, currently booked for 14th May 2023. And don’t forget the 2022 Charles Hicks Challenge scheduled for Sunday 13th November 2022.

We had close to 200 boats on the water over the course of the day and well over 200 paddlers in more than 20 different classes. A great team effort, on and off the water! Well done everyone!

Chairman

Ramblings from the Membership Secretary

Our membership records are undergoing a thorough review to make sure that we have a good understanding of what our membership really is. As part of this, you might receive an email saying that your membership has expired. If you do, and you don’t agree with that statement, please get in touch with me at b3cmembership@gmail.co.uk so things can be sorted out.

As part of the membership review, we are also looking at who has “On the Water” membership with British Canoeing. Can I ask that you all update your records on Webcollect to reflect your current British Canoeing membership status? Unfortunately, this doesn’t happen automatically at the moment, but it is something we are investigating.

As a reminder, all members are encouraged to take this out “On the Water” membership of British Canoeing in addition to club membership. This allows you to paddle on many inland waters across the UK including the Basingstoke Canal. If you don’t have it, you are only allowed to paddle on the Basingstoke Canal as part of a club-led activity. If you wanted to use the boats yourself, you would need a Basingstoke Canal licence or British Canoeing membership. As an aside, the BC annual membership is cheaper than an annual licence for the Basingstoke Canal! Joining British Canoeing is easy to do via their website www.britishcanoeing.org.uk

Charity donations to honour Graeme Harding

Graeme Harding (aka Silly Kissy Face: Don’t take life too seriously), an active B3C member, passed away in August 2021, unexpectedly but peacefully. A born water baby, he spent his last week enjoying paddling in the sea.

We had planned to sell some B3C club boats in the autumn and agreed to honour Graeme's passing by donating all of the proceeds to charity. We spoke to Graeme's partner, Sue and daughter, Emilia who asked for the donation to be split between Graeme’s favourite charities: the British Heart Foundation and Surfers Against Sewage.

All of the proceeds have now been received and we are proud to announce that each charity will receive £230.

Our ongoing best wishes to Sue, Emilia, Graeme's dog Tigg, and to his family and friends alike. And if you feel like it, do a silly kissy face in Graeme's honour - he would definitely approve.

Hare and Hounds

This month's Hare & Hounds will be on Saturday 18 June.

Choose your boat or SUP and decide on either the 2, 4 or 6 mile course.  If you haven't done it before, want further details or want to agree an appropriate start time for the 4 or 6 mile courses, please email Tony Gallagher.

BCCC Courses - There's lots to Discover

Since the last newsletter, eight adults and four juniors have successfully completed the BC Discover courses held in May.  Junior and adult courses are taking place during June and July, all of which are fully booked!

To make the course more accessible, we have changed the BC Explore Thames camping trip scheduled to take place on 25/26 June,  to a course on the canal with no camping. six places are still available, so please contact me if you wish to attend.

If demand continues, and coaches are willing to help, I may add another adult Discover course so, if you hold a current BC coaching award, please consider this as your personal invitation to volunteer either as an assistant or lead coach and help the club.

Alan Coleman - A message from Lis

We would very much like to thank everyone who came to Alan’s funeral and for all the kind cards and donations, it was a great comfort to us all and really appreciated.

Thank you.

Lis Coleman and family

Eagle Racing Kayak - Boat Swap

Are you looking to increase your wobble factor? Nick Gorman has an Eagle K1 which he would ideally like to swap for a more stable boat such as an Epsilon.  If you are interested, please contact Nick for more details.

And finally ………

Our Chairman, Bill Hansell, will be performing in the Hartley Arts Group production of Alan Aychbourn’s play Confusions later this month. The group will be performing the first four acts and Bill will be playing Harry Compton in Drinking Companions and Gordon Gosforth in Gosforth’s Fete.

Performances commence at 7.45pm on the 17th, 18th, 23rd, 24th and 25th June 2020 at Hartley Wintney Village Hall.   Tickets cost £12.50 and are available from Hartley Arts Group event tickets from TicketSource.  There will be a paid bar. For those of you who are unfamiliar with Confusions, here is a short synopsis.

So if you want a fun night out, go and see Bill in his other lives!
