A bunch of actors, a director, and a stage manager sit around a rehearsal hall, scripts in hand, pretending to be... a bunch of actors, a director, and a stage manager sitting around a rehearsal hall with scripts in hand. Such was the scene when the Winni Players Community Theatre group began the process of rehearsing Laughing Stock, a love letter to New England summer theatres written by Charles Morey.
Set at “the Playhouse†a fictional, barn-like summer theatre in New Hampshire, Morey’s comedy features a down-on-its-luck theatre company which hopes its current season – Dracula, Charley’s Aunt, and Hamlet – will turn around its fortunes. The hapless but hopeful Artistic Director, Gordon Page (played by Gilmanton’s Ray Dudley), does his very best to make the best art he can despite working with small budgets, diva actors, clueless directors, and a demanding donor. Add to that special effects that don’t quite go as planned, costumes which don’t quite make sense, lines that don’t quite get learned, and apprentices who don’t quite stay awake, and you have a recipe for comic disaster.
The Winni Players’ production is directed by Johanna Halperin and, in addition to Dudley, features local actors Daniel Adams, Ursula Boutwell, Katie Dunn, Bryan Halperin, Rodney Martell, Ken Chapman, Barbara Webb, Lynn Dadian, Suzanne Banister, Michael Baker, Chelsea Parent, Prezley Adair, and Christopher Gray-Romano.
Performances will be this Thursday – Saturday at 7:30pm with a matinee on Sunday at 2pm. Tickets are $18 for the orchestra and $12 for the balcony.
