Womble update

Keynsham Wombles are going from strength to strength, with 80 people now volunteering to litter pick an area of their choice on a regular basis! On 25th October there was 'Big Womble' around the perimeter of Wellsway School and Broadmead Lane behind the Waitrose store.  30+ bags of litter were collected and Waitrose Partners Volunteers joined in the fun - one of them even wore the Womble suit!

Soon to be seen on a lamp post near you will be 'Help Your Local Womble' signs.  Keynsham Wombles have kindly been given permission by B&NES to erect these Neighbourhood-Watch style signs in areas where there is an active Womble. The signs have been paid for with funding from Keynsham Town Council.

Following on from their success at the Keynsham Music Festival, the Wombles were asked to litter-pick at the Winter Festival (previously know as the Victorian Evening) - this article was written before the event, so hopefully it was a great success! Keynsham in Bloom/The Royal Horticultural Society awarded the Wombles a Level 4 ‘Thriving’ in this years It’s Your Neighbourhood competition too.  Keynsham Wombles now have over 100 followers on Facebook, so their fame is spreading! Please ‘like’ them if you are on Facebook.

Keynsham Community Energy

Keynsham Community Energy is at an exciting point in its existence. We are in the process of becoming a cooperative society for the benefit of the community. Our aim is to build community-owned renewable energy schemes in Keynsham that will generate green energy and provide income to fund carbon reduction projects in our community. We’ve also won support for business and organisational planning from Regen South West’s Community Accelerator Project.

We will also be applying to the Urban community energy fund to support the development of projects. We’re looking for volunteers to help with this new and exciting project. Everyone is welcome, and we are particularly keen to link up with people with legal, engineering, finance, accountancy and web skills.

Caterpillars

Keynsham Caterpillars is a local initiative for children between the ages of two and eight that uses outdoor play to promotes environmental awareness for children, parents and carers. Their simple philosophy is that by encouraging children to play out in the natural environment we can break the ‘conditioning’ that they encounter from an early age into becoming consumers.

The focus is on encouraging more sustainable lifestyles, like growing food at home and learning to respect the natural environment. There are regular play dates in the woods around Keynsham, and they also help out at TK’s Plot in the Park.

Keynsham Caterpillar’s co-ordinator Monica Tucker’s top Christmas tip is “get the children to participate in initiatives like the Shoe Box Appeal. They not only offer them a chance to give rather than take, they also make them realise that many children are not as lucky as they are.”
