Cape Breton Ski Club Board Update - Winter 2020

Dear Valued Members:

Our Community

It is hard to believe that March is here. As we enter our last month of another great ski season, it is thanks to a combination of natural and machine made snow. Opening date was delayed due to the lack of natural snow and unusually warm temperatures in December. Thank you to our amazing staff, that you see daily, and all the ones who are working hard behind the scenes.

We continue to make strong connections with our community. A great example of this is with the international students at CBU. We take for granted the snow and, for many of these students, this is their first opportunity to experience winter sports, as they enjoy our ski facilities. Also, to help promote international student involvement, we were very excited to have a new level one ski instructor, Louis Lui. He has been instrumental teaching new skiers in their native language of Mandarin.

Fundraising Activities
Snow Bucks: This year saw the launch of our new fundraising initiative called “Snow Bucks”.  This weekly 50/50 started in January, 2020, and will run for a compete 12-month period.  Winners are drawn every Tuesday and there have been 7 lucky winners, so far. The cost is $2.00 per person, per week, up until early January, 2021. To make it easy, you can “pay” for your number(s) in advance at the hill, then you just sit back, relax, and wait for your number to be called! It’s that easy! For details on how to purchase your tickets come and see us on Saturdays or Sundays at lunch or call the Ski office. A Snow Bucks box is always in Retail and others off site.

Auction: Another important fundraising event is our annual silent Auction.  Mark your calendars for March 28th, the last Saturday in March. There will be 1000’s of dollars in items so come out a make your bid!
Upcoming Events

March Break is fast approaching, March 14-22.  There will be lots of exciting camps and activities for everyone.  If you are interested and would like more information be sure to call our Ski office to sign up!  Make sure you call soon as we know these programs will fill up quickly!

Pass with Perks was launched on March 1st.  This is a great opportunity to get as much skiing in for the final month and to introduce new skiers to the hill.

Aloha to Summer & Mad Tuck Race, Slush Bowl and Dummy Race are all just around the corner! Get your racing legs ready! There will be some fantastic entertainment in the Broken Buckle Lounge to help celebrate the end of the ski season.

Update on Finances
Your Board of Directors and management have been working very hard to keep costs under control. As we prepare for the early bird special, we have noted that there has been no change to our membership rates for the past three years. There will be an increase in rates for the 2020/2021 season. The reasons for the increase is based on three main factors: insurances rates for the ski facilities have increased significantly across Canada, and indeed the world. We were notified by our insurance broker, in December, that our insurance would be increasing by $40,000.00 a year.  Another factor is the raise of minimum wage this year to $11.55/hr. There will be a second increase to this rate, in April to $12.55. This equates to a significant increase to our payroll. This season, we have introduced phase one of replacing our rental equipment. We are replacing our most used skis with new Head skis and bindings in the rental shop. We will also be replacing boots/helmets in a future phase. The ski replacement cost, this year, was $45,000. As you can appreciate, the increase to season rates is necessary to offset all new and future operating and maintenance costs. The 2020-2021 rates are listed in the chart below. The best deal is to take advantage of the early bird specials which runs from now until April 30th, 2020.

Operations Update

Ski Ben Eoin could not operate without our amazing staff.  The “Hill” employs 65 staff in both part-time and full-time positions. Ski Ben Eoin is often the first place young instructors begin working. It is also a place where staff have worked after they have finished a career in another field.  We are so lucky to have such a wonderful team who come back again year after year.

We would like to introduce you to our “LIFTIES”. Many of you know their faces but may not know their names. They work long hours in the cold/rain/sleet and wind and always do it with a smile.  We want to thank these wonderful gentlemen for all they do and for making the hill what it is. Be sure to say hi and thank you when you pass them.

This year, the tube park has been expanded to three nights a week. It has been great to see so many new faces at the hill as families and friends get out to enjoy winter! Also, we have had an increase in birthday parties and groups wanting to rent our boardroom this year. It is truly wonderful to see the broader community support the ski hill. We are now looking into how we can enhance their experience next season, including how we can add more tubing tracks. Stay tuned!

Board Update
Your Board of Directors is always looking for new members who are interested in promoting and growing winter sport at the Ski Hill including skiing, ski racing, snowboarding, snow- shoeing, cross country skiing, tubing, para-skiing, youth development, and local employment. If this sounds like something you are interested in please contact Ski Ben Eoin at 902 828-2804. As a reminder to all our members, the AGM for the 2019/2020 season will be held in June 2020.  Date to be confirmed.
