Dear Valued Members
Ski Ben Eoin is blessed to have a community of like-minded folks who want to see the Ski Hill thrive and continue to be a safe place for families to enjoy our beautiful winter. By providing programming that is accessible for families, introducing the world of skiing to our growing international community, supporting school age children to participate in a healthy lifestyle, keeping our seniors active and social during the winter months and employing people who live in Cape Breton. Whatever the connection you have with the hill, let’s work together and try to preserve an important community asset that opens its arms to everyone as they come and play in the winter.
The Ski Hill has had two very successful fundraisers which not only brought in much needed funds but saw a ton of support from your Ski Hill volunteers. The annual Ski Ben Eoin golf tournament had 34 teams, a beautiful day and a great time was had by all. Community members and visitors from all over were able to enjoy the beautiful scenery and lovely fall colors during the Celtic Colors chair ride event. These combined events raised over $29,000. A special thank you to the volunteers who made it all happen.
Update on Finances
Now that your Board of Directors have been notified of the costs from the court injunction, we felt it was time to communicate the information to each of you. What you will read in the following newsletter outlines the court costs, the plan to repay same along with some important information that is outstanding with the Ben Eoin Golf Club Limited (BEG)
The court has awarded costs in the amount $30,000. Please be assured that this amount will be paid in its entirety. In addition, there are related legal fees totaling $40,000, of which $14,000 was reflected in the prior year with the remaining $26,000 coming in the current year. Arrangements have been made to pay these fees in their entirety. While these numbers are not insignificant, they are not insurmountable when one considers, in 2006, Ski Ben Eoin was able to manage a $150,000 outlay as a founding investor in the development of the Lakes golf course.
Of concern, Ski Ben Eoin is owed approximately $120,000 for past property taxes and other shared costs from BEG. An additional concern is the fact that BEG has attached Ski Ben Eoin to a lawsuit initiated against BEG as a result of flooding in the basement of the golf clubhouse while BEG was occupying the premises.
As a result of the loss of the shared arrangement with BEG, Ski Ben Eoin will incur higher operating costs to recruit and retain the best staff available for our short operating season. As well, we will incur additional incremental costs related to the replacement of a new Point of Sale system and related hardware.
We are pleased to have Jen Foley, Megan MacLeod, Terry MacPherson, Melissa MacDonald and Shaun MacNeil returning this year and want to welcome our new Accountant Paul Burke and Snow School Director Sue MacLean. Paul and Sue will be joining our committed and experienced staff as they offer you the best winter experience this season.
We have many projects and events happening this season and are always looking for volunteers to help make these a success. Please consider taking some time out of your schedule to offer your support in making these initiatives a reality. Donna MacInnis and David Gabriel have taken on the task of coordinating this group of volunteers that will help us throughout the year.
Our expected opening date this season is December 26th! With the co-operation from Mother Nature, we hope to have the Tube Park open December 20th
The current Board of Directors is working diligently with a full slate of experienced and dedicated members with only one position available. If you are interested in joining this community minded, leadership group please contact the office or any current Board member.
