Happy Full Moon in Taurus! (which arrived Sunday morning)

I'd like to share news of a personal celebration - I graduated this past Wednesday! (at the University of Victoria, with a PhD in Counselling Psychology). One of my passions, along side teaching Yoga, has been my work as a Psychotherapist. In particular, the realm of Transpersonal Psychology, which honours and includes the spiritual dimension as well as the mental, emotional, and physical dimensions of our human being-ness. 
As you can imagine, Yoga integrates wonderfully with Transpersonal Psychology - enhancing and bringing into harmony all aspects of our being.

I hope you enjoy this months moon-letter which includes several Kriyas you can practice at home, a little background information on the mantra we're chanting in Kundalini class, and a couple breath practices to balance the Fire element within us.

Yoga Gems

Kundalini Kriyas

It is often suggested that we pick one Kriya that strongly resonates with us, and practice and perfect if over a period of 40 days. This way we can experience the full benefits of that Kriya.  

Other times, we can choose a particular Kriya to support  a specific purpose for that day.

For example, when I feel myself coming down with a cold, I will practice a Kriya for Disease Resistance.

Another wonderful Kriya, which we did in class a few weeks ago, is one that is helpful if you have difficulty sleeping soundly through the night (Kriya for Conquering Sleep).

And two more that I love: A Kriya for our Pituitary Gland, and a Kriya for Connecting with your Source of Infinite Energy.

Mantra
The mantra we're ending class with over the next few weeks is the Antar Naad Mantra:

Sa Re Sa Sa, Sa Re Sa Sa,
Sa Re Sa Sa Sa Rung
Har Re Har Har, Har Re Har Har,
Har Re Har Har Har Rung


Translation: "That Infinite Totality is here, everywhere. That creativity of God is here, everywhere."
Sa is the Infinite. It connects with the element ether. Har is the manifestation and creativity of the Infinite/God. It connects with the element Earth. Ung is a sound that projects outward into infinity.

The Fire Element

The last couple of weeks in Yin class we have been working with the Liver and Gall-Bladder Meridians, which connect to the element Fire, and the Samana Vayu.

The jewel that comes from being in harmony with the element Fire is the Wisdom of Discrimination. Other qualities that are present when we are in balance with this element are warmth and compassion, enthusiasm and joy, and creativity of mind.  When we are out of harmony with this element we may experience a lot of agitation and frustration, dullness and lethargy, and sleeplessness.  

A breath practice to cultivate the fire energy within us is Surya Bheda: inhaling through the right nostril and exhaling through the left nostril. A variation to this is to add a breath retention at the end of the inhale and focus on building heat in the Manipura (navel) chakra during the retention.

A breath practice to cool excessive fire energy is Sitali Pranayam: inhaling through circled lips or a curled tongue (like you're sipping through a straw), and exhaling through the nose.
