Yvonne's Message:
Thank you to everyone who has supported halow this month at all our activities and events. Boccia is proving a real winner with our young people and ARTGU and BFG are gearing up for Christmas. I hope that your own Christmas preparations will include halow Christmas cards! Please do join us at our This Is Me – Gala Concert in December and support our young people and staff at the Guildford Christmas Lights on 20th November. I look forward to seeing you there.

Yvonne Hignell, Director.

The High Sheriff of Surrey visits A Reason To Get Up's Crafty Creations.
At the beginning of October, Surrey’s High Sheriff, Peter Lee took time out of his busy schedule to visit our A Reason To Get Up programme (ARTGU) during a Crafty Creations session. Accompanied by Lesley Myles, Chairman of Surrey Youth Focus, the pair met the young people and staff involved in the programme at Lockwood Arts Centre. The visit came after ARTGU received a generous donation towards their Crafty Creations equipment and supplies from the Surrey High Sheriff Youth Awards. The group were busy making Christmas decorations and other festive goodies to sell on the halow stall at the Guildford Christmas light switch on. Come and see us- we will be on Guildford High Street all day on Thursday 20th November.
Do you know someone with energy and passion who could be a halow Buddy? We have daytime, evening and weekend work available now

Building Futures Group
The Building Futures Group (BFG) have been really busy with the new term. We thought the half term would be a great opportunity to tell you a little bit about what the group have been doing. Three highlights the group have particularly enjoyed are
  1. working with their gym instructor to establish personal goals which are supported by a fitness programme that suits them.
  2. learning about the First World War at Henley Fort, experiencing what it would have been like to be in the Home Guard.
  3. a great session from Mencap on their ‘Hear My Voice’ campaign. The campaign encourages people with a learning disability and their families to get involved in telling their members of parliament what’s important to them. In 2015 we will elect the people who will run the country for the next 5 years and we must tell our future leaders what needs to change. halow are keen to support this campaign and encourage all our young people to find out more and get involved.

My halow story
“I joined the halow Buddy Service 6 months ago and following my checks and training I began Buddying two young women. I support them to go shopping, cook meals and organise their social lives. Sometimes life can be challenging for the young people and this is when you need to have your energy and sense of humour to help keep spirits up. Every day is different and knowing my work makes a real difference, makes it the best job ever!”
Don't forget on Thursday 20th November halow will be on Guildford High Street all day for the Christmas Light Switch on!
