Public Hearings on Proposed Changes to Water & Chemigation Rules

The Lower Platte North NRD will hold public hearings on proposed changes to Rules and Regulations for the NRD's Ground Water Management Area and Chemigation Program beginning at 12:30 pm on February 9, 2015 at the district office in Wahoo.

Ground Water Management Area Rules

The primary focus of proposed changes to the GWMA Rules is to:

  • change the date that flow meters are required on high capacity wells from May 1, 2015 to May 1, 2016 in the Platte–Colfax Special Quantity Subarea
  • change the date that ground water levels must be measured in both the Butler–Saunders and the Platte-Colfax Special Quantity Subareas
  • develop spacing requirements from registered domestic wells that will apply District-wide

A public informational meeting on these changes will also be held on Friday February 6, 2015 at the Columbus Ag Park starting at 1:30 p.m.

The draft Rules & Regulations with these changes incorporated are available for download in PDF format:

Chemigation Rules

The primary focus of proposed changes to the Chemigation Rules is to update them based on recent changes on the state level that give NRDs more authority in the operation of the Nebraska Chemigation Act. This includes inspection procedures and the setting of chemigation fees.

2015 Nitrogen Certification/Water Conservation Classes

Certification classes for 2015 are being held now through March at various locations in the Lower Platte North NRD. These classes are primarily geared for area producers and cover several topics, including nitrogen management and application, water quality, water conservation and quantity, University of Nebraska research and recommended practices, and any recent legislation related to water use.

Uncertified producers and producers whose certification expires this year should plan to attend one of the classes. Certification is valid for four years and must be kept up to date in order to qualify for any of the NRD's cost-share programs and irrigated acre certification.

The classes are free and no preregistration is required.
Producers may attend whichever session works best for their schedule. Classes last approximately two hours. For more information, contact Water Resources Specialist Russell Oaklund or call (402) 443-4675.
