National School Choice Week Offers Opportunities to Highlight Choice Benefits
National School Choice Week is just around the corner! The week provides an opportunity for schools, organizations, and individuals to highlight the benefits of school choice programs and celebrate choice successes. What started as a week with 150 events in 2011, grew to 16,745 events last year, and looks to be over 17,000 events this year. The president of National School Choice Week, Andrew Campanella, noted, “Every year more and more schools, organizations, and individuals are jumping at the chance to shine a positive spotlight on school choice during the last week of January. We invite everyone to get involved and [be] heard.” Scheduled for January 22–28, 2017, this celebration of choice opportunities falls on the week immediately following the inauguration. President-elect Trump has been very vocal in his support for school choice and has nominated a dedicated supporter of school choice to be the Secretary of Education. With strong proponents in the White House and heading up the Department of Education, the school choice movement is ready to advance legislation and programs that will offer more options to parents and students, and localize educational control. This week, the Heritage Foundation released a list of 10 steps the Trump administration can take to advance educational choice for students and parents, including reauthorizing the DC Scholarship program and creating education savings accounts programs for children in military families and students attending schools in the Bureau of Indian Education. Education savings accounts are quickly becoming the vehicle of choice for programs that offer parents and students the most options and can be designed to avoid burdensome strings for participants. National School Choice Week offers an opportunity to highlight the benefits of choice programs to families and offers private schools that participate an opportunity to publicize the educational services they provide for students. Schools wishing to plan an event and participate in National School Choice Week can order a preparation kit that provides the trademark yellow scarves, signs, and stickers. March for Life to Mark the 44th Anniversary of Roe v. Wade
The 44th
March for Life will take place in Washington, D.C., on January 27, 2017. The March has become an annual occurrence for those wishing to peacefully protest the infamous 1973 Roe v. Wade Supreme Court ruling that legalized abortion. The first March for Life took place on January 22, 1974, on the one-year anniversary of that decision. Since then, pro-life advocates around the country participate either in DC or in rallies and marches in cities across the country to signal their solidarity with the pro-life cause and commitment to seeing abortion abolished. The theme for this year’s March is “The Power of One,” recognizing not just the value of every human life, but also the work that one person can do in fighting for the unborn. Coinciding with the March this year is the Evangelicals for Life conference in DC. This conference will offer attendees special seminars and information on pro-life issues such as legislative activity, advocacy resources, help for abortion survivors (both babies and mothers), and adoption. The conference includes a special break so attendees can participate in the March and also includes a special dinner, the proceeds of which will go towards purchasing ultrasound machines for crisis pregnancy centers.

Senate Refers Planned Parenthood to FBI for Investigation
Last week, following an investigation by the Senate Judiciary Committee into the practices of several companies involved in fetal tissue transfers with Planned Parenthood, Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley
referred Planned Parenthood and its affiliates to the FBI and the Department of Justice for further investigation and potential prosecution. The disturbing practice was brought to light by a series of undercover videos exposing the practice and the uncovering the profits gained from the illegal sale of fetal body parts. “I don’t take lightly making a criminal referral. But, the seeming disregard for the law by these entities has been fueled by decades of utter failure by the Justice Department to enforce it,” Grassley said in the referral letter to Attorney General Loretta Lynch and FBI Director James Comey. He continued, “And, unless there is a renewed commitment by everyone involved against commercializing the trade in aborted fetal body parts for profit, then the problem is likely to continue.” The referral by Sen. Grassley came as a result of the findings in an analysis of over 20,000 pages of documents by the Senate Judiciary Committee majority staff provided by the organizations and companies involved in the investigation.
