An important development — lap-dances now considered acts of prostitution.
Our work with the authorities has earned further advance apparent in the publication of the State Attorney's amended directive determining lap-dances be considered acts of prostitution. As such, the authorities will be able to prosecute strip clubs in which lap dances take place for the crimes of pimping and using a space for the purpose of prostitution.
This directive is largely a result of two years ongoing effort led by the Task Force against the licensing of strip clubs which serve as brothels. At the center of this struggle was a petition to revoke the license of the infamous “Pussycat Club”. Previously, Israeli authorities decided to close strip clubs’ private rooms in which prostitution services were provided, a decision which provided a tailwind for efforts to close a number of strip clubs in Tel-Aviv.
The closure of these private rooms lead us to join the efforts of our partners from the Coalition for the Struggle Against Prostitution to ensure the Knesset hear the voices of women telling not only of continuous exploitation for prostitution outside of the private rooms, but also asserting lap-dances themselves are acts of prostitution; that the scars lap-dances leave are enormous; that the struggle against the strip clubs must not end with the closure of private rooms. We worked until the recent, globally trail-blazing directive by the State Attorney was published.
