A Neighborhood Bookstore in the Heart of Atlanta
SEPTEMBER 15, 2021
“[T]hat old September feeling, left over from school days, of summer passing, vacation nearly done, obligations gathering, books and football in the air ... Another fall, another turned page: there was something of jubilee in that annual autumnal beginning, as if last year's mistakes had been wiped clean by summer.”
― Wallace Stegner,
Angle of Repose

Independent booksellers across the country have chosen Matrix by Lauren Groff (Riverhead) as their top pick for the September 2021 Indie Next List. “Lauren Groff has created an incredibly powerful portrait of the compelling Marie de France, banished to 12th-century England to live in a failing abbey,” said Rosanna Nissen of Barrett Bookstore in Darien, Connecticut. “I fell in love with Marie and the sisters she lives with.” Purchase a copy in the store, or order it from VaHiBooks' online store.

We are fortunate to have several local artists exhibiting their work in our store. This issue's focused artist is Evelyn Edmeades.

Evelyn received her BFA in photography from the University of Massachusetts.  She also studied at the University of Guadalajara, Mexico, Mass College of Art in Boston, the La Napoule Art Foundation in Southern France, and the College of Europe in Bruges, Belgium.

Although she has studied art and photography all over the world, Evelyn considers herself a largely self-taught painter.  With an emphasis on color, composition and texture, her work is not bound by traditional artistic convention and she freely experiments with new materials and techniques. Her vibrant, textural paintings, often abstract at conception, slowly evolve into works of art that have timeless appeal.  Palette knife, random markings and drip lines lend a contemporary aesthetic to her paintings.  Her diverse body of work ranges from evocative landscapes, wild birds, vivid abstracts and graceful figuratives.
“My style is a moving target. I paint what I feel on that particular day.  I work in a spontaneous manner constantly aware of, and always hoping for, those “accidental” moments that can enrich the outcome.  I rely on a combination of traditional and new techniques, color theory, and lucky mistakes.”
A resident of Virginia Highland / Morningside, Evelyn has been a mainstay of the art community in Atlanta for over 30 years.  When she’s not painting in the studio, she runs her own residential and corporate art consulting business, ArtSource Atlanta, she founded 18 years ago.

Evelyn's website, and her Instagram page, feature her many works; several of her pieces are displayed in our store. Not only can you enjoy Evelyn's work when visiting the store, all featured pieces are available for sale in the store. Prices are listed beneath the displayed pieces hanging in the store, or you can inquire at the check out counter for details.

The good news!

Purchase a ticket for admission and a plate of food by DBA Barbecue + a night of music, yard games and a raffle. A cash bar will be available. The early bird ticket price is just $20 through September 9th; starting on September 10th, tickets will be $25. Kids 10-and-under are $10.
