TODAY IS NATIONAL GIVE SOMETHING AWAY DAY

Imagine a day when you could clean house and get rid of clutter, show someone that you care, gift small things to strangers, and generally make the world a better place. Yes, this day does, in fact, exist and on July 15 we celebrate National Give Something Away Day! What a great opportunity to clean out your pantry, closet, basement, attic or garage, and pass those things you no longer need on to someone who does. There are many organizations in our community who would love to accept and distribute your donated items to those who need them; which is your favorite?

WHERE'S WALDO?
HE'S HERE IN VIRGINIA HIGHLAND THIS MONTH!

Where’s Waldo? In Virginia Highland, of course!

Waldo is visiting a number of VaHi businesses this July. Kids of all ages are invited to participate in the Find Waldo Local scavenger hunt, a great summer activity and a wonderful way to support local businesses!

HOW TO PARTICIPATE:

  • Pick up a Find Waldo Passport at VaHiBooks or any of the participating local businesses.
  • Find the "Shop Local: Find Waldo Here" sticker on the window/door of participating VaHi businesses.
  • Go inside and find the cardboard standee of Waldo inside; when you find him, go to the register to get a sticker on your passport.
  • When you spot the "Waldo with a difference" at VaHiBooks, you can collect a stamp there as well.
  • When you’ve collected ten different stickers, take your Passport to VaHiBooks for a Waldo temporary tattoo and a coupon for $1 off any Waldo book.
  • Collect twenty stickers and you'll be entered in a drawing in early August for special Waldo themed prizes!
HAPPY HUNTING!

TWO MORE WEEKS OF OUR
VAHI KIDS SUMMER READING PROGRAM!

Bring your K-6 grade kids to the store and ask the booksellers at the register to help them sign up and get started with our Summer Reading program! Each completed book log entitles the holder to visit our treasure chest! Enjoy the remainder of your summer and read as many books (and fill out as many book logs and win as many trips to the treasure chest) as you like until August 1!

VAHIBOOKS' LEGEN-DAIRY STORYTIME, JULY 21!

Visit VaHiBooks on July 21 at 4:00, 5:00 and 6:00 pm, when we will host a cow themed story time for kids! We will celebrate the VaHi Farmers' Market with goodies, stories, and more! Hit the Farmers' Market then bring your kids in for some legen-DAIRY fun!

VAHI READS' JULY BOOK CLUB

Our VaHiReads Book Club will meet again on July 26, at which time we will discuss Trust by Hernan Diaz. We will host meetings at both 1:00 and 7:00. Due to the popularity of our book club, space is limited to the first 30 people to RSVP to the linked Evites:

IN STORE EVENT: MARY MCMYNE, AUTHOR OF THE BOOK OF GOTHEL

Join us as we welcome Mary McMyne, author of The Book of Gothel, in the store on July 30 from 3:30 to 5:00 pm.

Everyone knows the tale of Rapunzel in her tower, but do you know the story of the witch who put her there? A dark, lush, and beautiful reimagining of Rapunzel from the witch’s perspective, The Book of Gothel is a tale of motherhood, magic, and the stories we pass down to our children.

“Smart, swift, sure-footed and fleet-winged, The Book of Gothel launches its magic from a most reliable source: the troubled heart. Mary McMyne is a magician.”—Gregory Maguire, NYT bestselling author of Wicked.

WHAT'S ON OUR BOOKSELLERS' TO-BE-READ LISTS?

Have you ever wondered what people who sell books for a living choose to read themselves? Several of our VaHi booksellers have revealed what they have on their current TBR lists!

Bookseller Devin's July picks are campy, viciously funny, and slightly morbid. Each book offers plot-driven entertainment and explores the many shades of being a woman, and we are here for it! Books photographed: The House Across the Lake by Riley Sager; Yerba Buena by Nina Lacour; Certain Hunger by Chelsea G. Summers; Nevada by Imogene Binnie. #womenslit # bookseller #campybooks #datkhumor #womenwhoread

Bookseller Maggie enjoys books with lovable characters, cozy magic, and beautiful prose, which is why here July TBR stack emulates her taste perfectly! Books photographed: Trust by Herman Diaz (our July book club pick!); A Town Called Solace by Mary Lawson Fox, and Fox and I by Catherine Raven. #bookswithmagic #bookswelove #reader #bookish #vahibooks #tbrstack

Bookseller Alex is our resident romance specialist, but sometimes she reads outside the box; her TBR stack this month includes general fiction, a graphic novel memoir, and a highly anticipated new release! Books photographed: The Secret to Superhuman Strength by Alison Bechdel, Patricia Wants to Cuddle by Samantha Allen, Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin. #bookswelove #reader #bookish #vahibooks #tbrstack

Bookseller March is our Featured Bookseller for July! She describes her taste as humorous and slightly cynical, with underlying themes of hope. Books pictured (right photo):  The Candy House by Jennifer Egan, The Idiot by Elie Bautman, Pachinko by Min Jin Lee, Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro.
