Read "Hard Heart" for free this weekend!

“The first time I saw your face, I knew, I was meant for you... You don't need to wonder, if love will make us stronger. There's nothing love can't do!”
— Tegan & Sara

Be My Valentine...
Have I gotta Heart for you!

VigilantesIT'S FRIDAY NIGHT AND Valentine's Day... I hope everyone has a great Valentine’s weekend — sharing the joy that only romantic love can bring. While I don’t quite buy The Beatles’ “Love is all you need” sentiment, love is pretty high up there on the list.

My son was busy this week making Valentines for the kids in his class, and that exercise reminded me of a short story called "Hard Heart" that I wrote 20 years ago; it remains one of my favorite short fantasy tales that I’ve written. It originally was published in Sirius Visions magazine in 1994 and was reprinted in my Vigilantes of Love collection.  I hope you’ll enjoy it. Rather than email it to you, I've posted it today on my blog for you. Click here to read "Hard Heart."

Cage of Bones
If you follow my Facebook or Twitter, you know that I put Vigilantes of Love and my first erotic horror collection Cage of Bones & Other Deadly Obsessions on sale this week at $2.99 for Valentine's Day. And today, Amazon trumped me and dropped the price on Vigilantes to $1.99.

Vigilantes is full of tales with musings on love (and ghosts and witches), while Cage of Bones is filled with bizarre horror kink (and tales like "Pumpkin Head" and "Dead Girl on the Side of the Road"). But I love them both!

If you haven't downloaded them, I hope you'll give them a shot this weekend while they're still on sale.

Either way — I hope you enjoy "Hard Heart."  and have a great Valentine's Day weekend with those that you love!

Readings and Signings
From Gumbo to DanCon

All American HorrorNEXT WEEK ON FEBRUARY 20, I'll be doing a live reading in Chicago at the Gumbo Fiction Salon to celebrate the release of  All-American Horror of the 21st Century. My short story "The Pumpkin Man" is included in the volume, which is edited by Mort Castle and features an amazing array of talent. Several authors included in the book will be reading on Thursday at the Galway Arms bar at 2442 N. Clark St. in Chicago, starting at 7 p.m. So come on out to hear Jay Bonansinga, Mort Castle, Jeff Jacobson, Tina Jens, Wayne Allen Sallee, Sam Weller and me this Thursday!

IF YOU'RE A SOUTH SIDER,, mark March 23rd on your calendar. I'll be appearing all afternoon at DanCon at the Orland Park, IL Civic Center for the third year in a row. Check out the event info at www.DanConComic.Blogspot.com.

This is a fun show with tons of comic book artists and creators.  And I'll be there with a table of books!

Revisiting lost tales...
"Fish Bait" is out from Amazon StoryFront; "Eardrum Buzz" is coming...

IN DECEMBER, AMAZON.COM LAUNCHED a new publishing imprint called StoryFront, designed to spotlight short fiction releases. They debuted their new publishing imprint with my story "Fish Bait," originally published in The Horror Library Vol. 3 anthology. If you haven't had a chance to read it, you can download a copy here.

Next week, on February 19th, StoryFront will be publishing my story "Eardrum Buzz," which was first published in my collection Creeptych, but has been out of print for awhile now.  You can find that tale here. I'm pretty excited that these stories have a new life on a new label... and now — their own cover art to boot — check it out:

Navel-gazing...
A look back at Lucky '13

ON DECEMBER 31, I sat up late and wrote my usual year-end blog looking back at the prior year. This is pretty old news at this point, but I never sent out a newsletter in January, so if you are interested in such navel-gazing and want to know my personal highpoints of 2013, including a couple snapshots from my trip to Santiago, Chile and the day I met William Shatner, check out Goodbye, Lucky 13 on my blog!

That's it for now... I hope you had some chocolate or champagne or... mmm ... something better(!) for Valentine's tonight!

Decadent Dreams,
John
