From Kathleen:
Being With the Grief of Goodbyes

Believe me, I was hoping for a different topic to close out 2012. Grief, however, seems to be the companion regularly knocking on the door. Reluctant at first to open my heart to the grief, I'm now finding the air fresher with the door knocked off its hinges. Really. The broken-open heart has room for grief and gratitude, sharp pain, unexpected laughter and fierce tenderness.

I can't claim this in all moments, but right now I'm celebrating how alive I feel and how simple life has become with my attention on giving and receiving as authentically as possible. So what do I do with the grief when it comes? Remember the fire it springs from and allow it to burn. More specifically, I'm learning to pause and put my attention on the feelings as they call for my attention rather than push them away as I used to do. I pay attention to how my body feels, the physical sensations arising, the thoughts/memories in my awareness, the energy of the emotions as it come in waves. No resistance, just letting the experience be.

As I allow myself to sink into the essence of the energy, there's usually a profound beauty that underlies the pain. As I choose to ride that beauty I sense a sweetness that permeates the loss, something core, something deeply human and meaningful. Allowing the energy of that beauty to wash over me, I find restoration and connection with what I cherish. From that place, I move into the next moment carrying with me the clarity of what matters most. Grateful once again for the courage to be with grief so that the love may shine through and shape my life more fully.

• Kathleen's New Course at the NVC Academy
NVC Multimedia Library Resources with Kathleen Macferran
The NVC Academy is one of the best resources I know for learning about Nonviolent Communication from your home or office. Not only do you have access to resources from Certified Trainers with the Center for Nonviolent Communication from all over the world, you can find community that cares about the things you care about through telecourses and on-line offerings.

For those of you ready to dive in and integrate NVC into your daily lives, this is an invaluable resource. I'm celebrating my multi-media "Introduction to Nonviolent Communication" on-line course that has been several years in the making. The introduction is unique in that I've written every concept in three different voices:

  • "Classic NVC" (the language I learned from Marshall Rosenberg)
  • "Practical NVC" (language I might use in an adult casual or work setting)
  • "Youth Oriented NVC" (language I might use when talking with your children)

The purpose of the three voices is to support those wanting to find natural ways of integrating NVC into life without losing the spirit of the process. The course is set up to use as an individual or to use as a framework for a practice group. To locate the class, go to www.nvcacademy.com, find trainers:

You'll need a subscription to access the class.

Enjoy! I'd love any feedback you'd like to send my way. NVC Multimedia Library Resources with Kathleen Macferran
