Volume 04, Issue 03 - 2016.04.20
Springtime and the livin is busy...

We can feel the energy building here in Utah - there is so much to do in just a few months! Art projects are under way, Element 11 registrations are open for both art cars and theme/sound camps, and our Jackalope Rodeo Theme Art contest ends tomorrow! Also, there are a few fun events coming up you'll not want to miss - the Spring Burn & Burner Day in the Park/Q2 Town Hall/Volunteer Day. Looking forward to seeing everyone out and about and hearing about all the projects underway.

In this issue, we are excited to introduce a new logo for Element 11 which you'll see at the top of the newsletter, along with a new masthead for the Salt Shaker. The new logo is based on two ideas: Community and Construction. Everything connects: people, ideas, objects… and these connections are the basis for our community. The converging lines in the logo represent these connections. In addition to the community, the logo is meant to represent building and structure. Imagine the wooden components that make up the construction of an effigy or a temple. Out of nothing, we as a community construct something. These two ideas: Community and construction… are fundamental to the Element 11 organization and event. We feel this new logo represents both of these ideas.

As we look ahead to the busy times these next few months before Element 11, we are so appreciative of you - our amazing Utah community. Our annual event would not be possible without all of you. We look forward to seeing you and all of your incredible creativity at this year’s Element 11 event and thank you for everything that you do.

Utah Leaders Attend the 10th Annual Burning Man Global Leadership Conference

by Matt Vagabond

Over the first weekend in April, over 20 members of the Utah Burning Man Community converged in San Francisco with bad ass Burners from around the globe to participate in the 10th Annual Burning Man Global Leadership Conference. It was an exciting opportunity to learn about the innovative, creative, and inspirational things happening in other communities, and to share our community's experiences. The GLC is all about connecting regional leaders and engaging them in a conversation of ideas to support our local participants, encourage our culture of doing, and how to share our stories with the world around us.

It was a busy weekend full of classes, presentations, and quick meetings with colleagues from far flung lands. Summarizing a gathering this awesome is near impossible! Presentations were given by science fiction authors, politicians, Burning Man Leadership, even our own Kari Larson and Jeff Reese. These presentations all seemed to be connected by a theme of community engagement, not just engaging ourselves, but how to share this thing we do with those around us. Our culture of dreaming, making, doing, and being is worth giving away!

We're grateful for the opportunities we had to learn, share, volunteer, and connect, and we're eager to share our experiences with you. Come find us at our events if you're interested in hearing more, and in the meantime here are a few quotes from local attendees:

"I felt so inspired by the burgeoning regionals all over the globe, and learning how these different places are finding larger supporting communities than they ever dreamed existed". - Michelle Davis, Ranger Lushush - Secretary, Element 11

"There is no community in 'Fuck You'." - John Ward, Regional Contact

"Taking different aspects from similar events around the globe, and combining the best of those ideas into our own local community. To create events that give back to the community, outreach to a wide spectrum of people, and overall build stability in our city." - Martian Glassner - Volunteer Director, Element 11

"The camaraderie that our community leaders and regional contacts gain from learning, laughing, crying, dancing, sharing, inspiring, and bumping elbows with like-minded artists, leaders, makers, doers, and hyperdriven-half-batshit-half-genius impassioned and creating individuals chasing our same mission on the other side of our hurling, spinning space-rock was akin to riding a Pegasus across Yosemite falls with Scarlett Johansson blaring Journey on a boombox in one hand and a mojito in the other and a flock of eagles guiding our way." - David Born - Vice-Chairman, Element 11

"The amount of community found within likeminded people who come together to share, shimmy and shake with one another is incomprehensible. The laughter, tears, knowledge share, dancing, new friends makers and doers from across the globe rally and enthusiastically support the global initiative which fuels their passion. Amazing, inspirational, supporting event!" - Cassie Plant, Ranger Spirit - Treasurer/Finance Director

Utah Builders Community Receives Civic Art Grant

by John Ward

We are excited to announce that the Utah Builders Community have been awarded a civic art grant from Burners Without Borders as part of their Walk the Talk grant program! The Utah Builders Community is a newly established non-profit entity to create a place to build large-scale community projects.

The purpose of this grant program is to bring more burner-inspired art and civic engagement projects into the greater community. The awarded project is an interactive sound sculpture called Tintinnabularium - derived from the noun tintinnabulation (tin·tin·nab·u·la·tion): “a ringing or tinkling sound”.

In conjunction with the Utah Burning Man Regional Contacts, Element 11 and the greater Burner community, we plan to integrate this art piece with on-going civic engagement projects, such as the recent Utah Burners Without Borders tree planting and community garden clean up effort at the Road Home Shelter. The project leads are John Ward (Utah Regional Contact, Co-Director Utah Builders Community) and David Born (Element 11 Vice Chair / Creative Director).

Stay tuned, you can find additional information at the following link... Burning Man Journal - global network
