Family Focus Title

Believe it or not the school Summer Holidays are only three weeks away!  That means only 21 sleeps for the kids until the end of school and only 21 sleepless nights for parents and carers to figure out how to keep them entertained for six weeks without breaking the bank!  Even if your child hasn’t reached school age yet it can be hard to find activities for them to do over the Summer.

Well, fear not.  We have brought together all the information you need to help make sure the Summer flies by whatever the British weather might do.

We know you like to get organised early hence why we are sending this out at the beginning of July but this also means that not all activities have been finalised.  We will send out an updated edition once the schools actually break up.

Where to find childcare for the school holidays

Image of child reading a book

If you still need to find formal childcare for part or all of your childcare needs this Summer Holidays then we can help!

The Family Information Service can provide you with a personalised list of the OfSTED registered Out of School Clubs and Childminders offering holiday childcare in your area.  Using a registered childcare provider means that your child/ren can meet new friends and have fun taking part in stimulating, planned activities whilst you are at work.  Depending on your circumstances, there may also be financial help available to meet the costs of using formal childcare.

Holiday clubs and childminders organise trips to local attractions as well as having a wide range of planned activities suitable for all ages. Many can offer you the flexibility to pick and choose the hours you need. They also offer flexible hourly, half day and full day rates to keep the costs down.

To receive a list of the registered childcare providers in your area or for advice on help with meeting the costs of childcare, please call the Family Information Service on
01724 296629 or email fis@northlincs.gov.uk

If your child will be starting school in September and you will need childcare before and/or after school and to have them dropped off or picked up from school, we can help with this too. Just contact us with the name of your child’s school and we will send you a list of the OfSTED registered childcare providers who offer before and after school childcare for children attending that particular school.

The Summer Reading Challenge
 Summer reading challenge/record breakers logo
Record Breakers Summer Reading Challenge 2015 is coming to your local library from Saturday 11 July to Saturday 5 September. (Mon 13 July- Fri 5 Sept at Haxey Library and Goxhill Community Library.)

The 2015 theme is Record Breakers, to link with Guinness World Records 60th anniversary.

This will be our 17th summer reading challenge celebrating personal achievements. We are inviting young people to take part, reading at least 6 books and sharing their experiences with library staff. We have smelly stickers to collect, a bookmark, zip pull and a certificate on the way to achieving a special medal.

The challenge is designed to promote the sheer enjoyment of reading for pleasure, and creates a real buzz around children’s reading.  It is suitable for
young people aged 4 years and over.

Children’s reading can ‘dip’ during the long summer holidays. The Reading Agency’s annual Summer Reading Challenge helps get three quarters of a million children into libraries to maintain their reading skills and confidence. Because everything changes when we read.

In 2014, 1267 North Lincolnshire children took part, with 660 being awarded a medal. That means thousands of books were read – a lot of reading fun, and all free at local libraries.

If you are under 4 years old, we offer the special year-round Bookstart Bear Club, so no one is left out. Bear Club participants will receive the summer reading challenge certificate if they tell us about 6 books during the holiday.

Record Breakers Summer Reading Challenge is produced by the Reading Agency and delivered by libraries.

See the Summer Reading Challenge website for more information.

Get on your bike!

Sky Ride Local is back with a vengeance – it’s bigger and better than ever before with 20 FREE bike rides taking place across North Lincolnshire which started on Sunday 7 June 2015.

A group of adults and children on the skyride.

New rides include Belton and Messingham, alongside our most popular routes from Normanby Hall, Brigg, Scunthorpe and Barton to name just a few.
There will be rides every weekend right through to October.
With Sky Ride Local, all the planning has been done for you – all you have to do is turn up and get pedalling. We’ve found the best routes and trained ride leaders will guide and support you. No-one if left behind and most rides take in a stop at a local café.
To find a ride near you and book your free place, visit www.goskyride.com/North-Lincolnshire. It couldn’t be simpler to get on your bike and ride.
For more details about the North Lincolnshire Sky Ride Local, contact Lindsay Heathfield on 07717588193 or email Lindsay.heathfield@northlincs.gov.uk.

Lindsay Heathfield, Sport, Play and Community Development Officer, North Lincolnshire Council, said:
“Sky Ride is a fantastic initiative that aims to get more people on their bikes by taking part in organised and fully supported cycle rides. Cycling is a great way to keep fit, socialise, and take in the beautiful scenery and fresh air. And it’s good for the mind too.
“This is the fourth year Sky ride has been running locally and it’s going to be the best ever with more routes added, giving people greater choice.
“So come on – now the weather is starting to improve, do something positive and get on your bike!”

Ensuring the activity you choose is safe

We all want our children to have fun but it is also of the utmost importance that they are also kept safe whatever they choose to do over the Summer.
