1.  The Greenhouse Gas Protocol Scope 2 Guidance

Most - if not all - companies need to buy electricity which has been produced by others. How do companies have to account for the carbon emissions resulting from the production of that electricity? Or, in 'carbon footprinting terminology': how do companies have to calculate their scope 2 emissions?

The Greenhouse Gas Protocol is finalising a guide on the subject: the Scope 2 Guidance. In March 2014, the Secretariat of the Greenhouse Gas Protocol organised a public consultation about the draft. And in September 2014 a slightly restructured version was discussed in the Scope 2 Technical Working Group.

Yesterday, Mary Sotos from the Greenhouse Gas Protocol gave a presentation about the Guidance at a green electricity event in Taiwan. The distributed text confirms that the final version, which will be published soon, will be similar to the last public drafts.

2.  EKOenergy and the Scope 2 Guidance

The new Guidance stimulates companies on liberalised markets to make use of their right to choose.

"I hope that the Scope 2 Guidance will trigger a conversation in companies and create a movement in the industry: how can we contribute to the urgent climate crisis by commencing to report, committing to low-carbon and renewable energy and communicating our accurate greenhouse gas emissions?"  explains Mary Sotos of the Greenhouse Gas Protocol in an interview today.

This is exactly what EKOenergy is about.

In the latest drafts of the Greenhouse Gas Protocol Scope 2 Guidance, EKOenergy and EKOenergy´s Climate Fund are listed as a useful tool for companies that want to do more. We don't know yet if we will be explicitely mentioned in the final text, but EKOenergy definitely fits in the new Scope 2 Guidance's approach. We'll keep you informed.

3.  Scope 2 Guidance: summary in more than ten languages

The Scope 2 Guidance documents are long and technical. To make it easier for you, we summarised the main requirements and recommendations in two pages. We also added a one page glossary.

The summary is based on the currently available texts from the Greenhouse Gas Protocol Secretariat.

The draft summary is available in Albanian, Czech, Dutch, English, Finnish, French, German, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish and Turkish. Please note that some details may have to be reviewed after the publication of the full text of the Scope 2 Guidance.

We welcome your feedback on the original as well as on the translations. If you have suggestions to improve our summaries, let us know.

The final versions of our summary and its translations will be published soon after the publication of the full text of the new Scope 2 Guidance. See http://www.ekoenergy.org/ecolabel/other-standards/ for the most recent versions.

4.  Tümay translated the summary into Turkish

Tümay Forster translated the summary into Turkish. Who is she, and why is she doing this?

"I am an Edinburgh based public services interpreter, translator specialising in Scottish Law and a member of the Chartered Institute of Linguists in London."

"I regularly carry out voluntary work as this gives me a chance to take part in projects that I care about and gaining valuable experience whilst making a real difference in the lives of others."

"Green energy is something that I hold very close to my heart, particularly after the coal mine tragedies in Turkey claiming more than 300 lives this year alone. Here in Scotland, nearly half of our electricity comes from renewable energy and the government is fully committed to increasing this to 100% as soon as possible. Unfortunately in Turkey, nearly 3/4 of the energy need is still being covered by fossil fuels either imported or from domestic resources. I feel that the socio-economic burden of import costs and needless loss of lives makes the issue of obtaining energy from renewable resources Turkey's number one priority. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to take part in spreading the word."

Thank you Tümay and 90 other translators for helping us to spread EKOenergy's texts in close to 30 languages.

5.  Announcement: GHG Protocol workshops in Brussels and London

The World Resources Institute organises, in cooperation with several European stakeholders, two European information sessions about the new Scope 2 Guidance.

"Transforming energy: bringing electricity procurement into corporate carbon footprints - Release events for the GHG Protocol Scope 2 Guidance"

London, January 21 &
Brussels, January 22.

For more information, see http://ghgprotocol.org/events

This event is free and everybody is invited to attend. Registration required: via e-mail to Lindsey Longendyke of the World Resources Institute, at llongendyke@wri.org.

6.  Welcome to EKOenergy's Advisory Group

EKOenergy's Advisory Group will be recomposed soon. We are welcoming new members.

The Advisory Group can give input on any issue related to EKOenergy. The Advisory Group is actively informed about the Board’s agenda. The Board has to respond within two months to comments and questions of the members of the Advisory Group.

The Advisory Group does not meet physically. In 2015, the workload is expected to be "very moderate". The focus will continue to be on implementing the decisions we made in the beginning of 2013, rather than on opening new discussions about content and structure. In 2016, we plan an evaluation about several of our criteria.

If you would like to become a member of our Advisory Group, feel free to contact us for more information.
