BMA Local Buying Program recent results

The BMA Local Buying Program (BLBP) continues to provide opportunities for small businesses from Blackwater, Capella, Dysart, Emerald, Moranbah, and Nebo in the Bowen Basin and now businesses in the Mackay Region to competitively supply goods and services to BMA and BMC.  Since the program commenced in July 2012, progress has included (as at end March 2015):
  • 640+ approved C-Res / BLBP Suppliers 
  • 4,000+ work opportunities have been made available to local businesses
  • average payment of 11 days from supplier claim to payment
  • total approved spend awarded to local businesses -  in excess of $46M
  • $590,000+ has been allocated to the Local Buying Community Foundation

Small Business Events in Moranbah

Small businesses received a competitive advantage when they attended one or more of the Local Buying Community Foundation (LBCF) sponsored Building Sustainable Business Communities Workshops and Networking Event held in Moranbah recently.
 
Events Included:
“Tapping Into Supply Opportunities” – A Networking event & Panel Presentation featuring representatives from Arrow Energy, BMA, Isaac Regional Council & Moranbah Traders Association. 

“Developing a Practical Approach to Marketing” – An intensive ‘hands on’ workshop followed by one on one mentoring  sessions with Melissa Westcott, TM3 Training Solutions.

 “Can your Business run a Marathon or just do a quick Sprint” –  A workshop assisting businesses to engage with resource companies followed by one on one mentoring  sessions with Bronwyn Reid, Mining For Business and Michael McLean, BMA.

Andre, Jenna and "Crackles" the van, will now greet you on the drive from Mackay to Moranbah along the Peak Downs Highway on the BMA Local Buying Program (BLBP) Billboard.

The Roast Shack in Moranbah is one of the hundreds of approved suppliers for the BMA Local Buying program across the Bowen Basin and Mackay Regions. 

The business opened it's doors in 2013 and since then owners Jenna and Andre believe that their business has benefited from the Program in numerous ways.  They have been engaged directly by BMA to cater for various events, they have also had access to business development activities by attending workshops and events sponsored by the Local Buying Community Foundation.

Local Buying Community Foundation Update

The Local Buying Community Foundation is a critical element of the BMA Local Buying Program.  The Foundation aims to support economic development and sustainability of communities within BMA and BMC’s communities of interest. Through programs and initiatives that target local business training and development, the Foundation is assisting to build and develop local business capability and capacity.  For all approved transactions processed through the Local Buying Program, BMA and BMC make a financial contribution to the Community Foundation, supporting continuous investment in the region.  The key areas of focus for the Foundation include:

  1. Building Sustainable Futures (BSF)
  2. Building Sustainable Business Communities (BSBC)
At the end of March 2015, the Community Foundation deliverables include:
  • Total funds contributed to the Community Foundation Trust - in excess of $590,000
  • 37 approved projects and or initiatives delivered across Central Highlands and Isaac regions with funding of over $320,000 allocated to these initiatives
In March the Foundations Advisory Committee met and approved funding for the following applications from Round 1, 2015.
  • Central Highlands Business Awards 2015 Sponsorship-  (October, 2015)
  • Accounting Software Training Events across the Central Highlands & Isaac Regions
  • Central Highlands Careers Expo Sponsorship (June, 2015)

Moranbah Traders Business Excellence Awards

The Local Buying Community Foundation (LBCF) was proud to be a Gold Sponsor and Innovations Category Sponsor of the Moranbah Traders Business Excellence Awards on Saturday 21 March.  The event celebrated the hard work and dedication of local businesses and recognised exceptional customer service through the Service Star Awards.
 
This year saw a change in the judging of the business awards with businesses self-nominating and a rigorous judging process by a panel of industry leaders. 
 
The award for the Innovation Category and Overall Best Business was Big On Shoes, an online and retail business specialising in larger size ladies shoes.   The Judges commented on the innovative approach, strategic planning and partnerships as the business grows.

 The LBCF views the sponsorship of these awards as critical in its aim of Building Sustainable Business Communities.

Central Highlands Business Excellence Awards

Nominations are currently open for the second Central Highlands Business Excellence Awards which will be awarded at a Gala Dinner on Saturday 15 October.   The awards are based on a self-nomination system with all entrants being judged by an independent judging panel.

The LBCF is proud to once again be a sponsor of the event and the “Training Knowledge and Development Category”.  The LBCF encourages all Central Highlands businesses to participate in the awards which showcase the diversity of the Central Highlands business community while prompting best practise in strategic business planning and delivery.
