HAPPY FAIR HOUSING MONTH!

As you may know, April is National Fair Housing Month and we at HOCN are always excited to celebrate! The Fair Housing Act was signed this month in 1968 to ensure that everyone has access to quality, affordable housing. We encourage everyone, homeowners and tenants alike, to know their rights and report any incidents of housing discrimination that occur against you and your family. Fair housing is your right, regardless of your race, color, national origin, sex, disability, family status, national origin, sexual orientation, or gender identity.

We hope you will join in celebrating with us on Wednesday, April 16th at La Tee Da Cafe for our Happy Hour for Housing. You can catch up with our staff and board members, learn more about past and current projects, and get a special sneak peek at our Lower West Side t-shirts!

Sincerely,

Stephanie Simeon, Executive Director

NATIONAL FAIR HOUSING MONTH

Each April, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) uses Fair Housing Month to mark the passage of the 1968 Fair Housing Act, the landmark law passed shortly after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. which prohibits housing discrimination based on race, color, national origin, religion, sex, disability, and family status. This year’s Fair Housing Month theme is “Fair Housing is Your Right: Use It!”  Learn more about what your rights are to fair housing here.
