Deaf & Hear Alberta established the Tom Pinder Education Scholarship in 2014 thanks to our long-time and generous supporters, Tom and Kathy Pinder.  The scholarship provides financial support to post-secondary students or adult learners who are Deaf, hard of hearing, or cochlear implant users.

There were many incredible applications for this year’s scholarship: 14 were submitted in total.  Although we at Deaf & Hear Alberta had a difficult time in selecting the winners, we are excited and happy to announce both of the winners.  It was their compelling educational aspirations to directly support the Deaf and hard of hearing communities that ultimately resulted in the selection of the two successful candidates.

A little bit about our winners:

Sheila Johnson Court,  who resides in Edmonton,  has already attained a degree in English and an M. Ed in Educational Psychology - and has taught English as a second language. She intends to use the scholarship funds to attend Lakeland College in September 2016.  She has received acceptance into the ASL & Deaf Culture Studies program and will use her scholarship dollars towards her tuition costs.

Harman Dhatt lives in Calgary.  He wishes to pursue a career as a Deaf Interpreter. However, Harman first intends to complete his English studies at Bow Valley College in Calgary so he can prepare himself and be ready to begin studying the program that will allow him to become a certified Deaf Interpreter in the near future.  He intends to use the scholarship dollars for Interpreter Fees and Tutor costs.

Congratulations!

Congratulations to our Peer-to-Hear Mentors and Mentees for successfully completing our pilot project!  You are an awesome group of individuals.   We have been touched and inspired by your successes and the stories of your journey in the past three months.  Your feedback has been very helpful and will guide the next phase of the program.  Lorraine has retired. In the meantime please contact Cammie Kaulback with any inquiries.

Thanks to a Community Grant from Edmonton Community Foundation (ECF), Deaf & Hear Alberta is now ready to launch an expansion of our Accessibility Services Program to offer local services to the Edmonton community.

Deaf & Hear Alberta promotes full participation by Deaf and hard of hearing individuals in their communities and in society.  Communication access, services and technology will NOW be more readily available to our clients in Edmonton for their daily living activities through the establishment of a local Accessibility Services Program in Edmonton.

Our Accessibility Services team has worked hard to increase our presence in the Edmonton community and to support those hard of hearing and Deaf individuals in need of services and technology to assist them in their everyday lives.

We will hire a new Client Services Coordinator for our Edmonton office and in the coming weeks, they will begin serving our Edmonton clients locally.

Deaf & Hear Alberta can take a big step forward in helping to remove barriers and build bridges to communication. This is a service that will deeply impact the citizens of Edmonton, and we are very grateful to the Foundation for their support and commitment to supporting the Deaf and those living with hearing loss.

ECF is the catalyst for building and strengthening our community, and they are helping us enrich the lives of hard of hearing and Deaf people living in Edmonton by helping Deaf & Hear Alberta to create even more positive change with the expansion of our programs and services in our Edmonton office.

Please join us in thanking ECF for their support of our services and programs.  To learn more about ECF we encourage you visit their website.
