Greetings Friends –

Thanks to so many of you who have reached out to support our Ukrainian Aid Outreach; more than 325 supporters have contributed nearly $100,000 to date. As the war continues, the number of students who have enrolled at St. Nicholas Ukrainian Cathedral School has grown. Principal Anna Cirilli and her wonderful team of teachers and school staff members have welcomed more than 20 new students with harrowing stories of fleeing Ukraine. One family, with sons in kindergarten and fifth grade, left Kyiv through a Russian checkpoint and walked on foot for nine hours into Poland. They came to Chicago with literally nothing and have family in Chicago with whom they will be living. Three others families are facing a heart wrenching separation, with a father staying behind in the Ukraine and a mother and children going ahead to Chicago.  In addition to tuition assistance to enroll at St. Nicholas, these students are in need of intensive social emotional support. Principal Cirilli is going to heroic efforts to make this a positive, welcoming transition to their school community. We are so lucky to have leaders in the Big Shoulders Fund schools like Anna, with an eagerness to effectively partner with one another, the larger community, and supporters to meet the needs of children.

In other places across the City, the work of broadening horizons and providing support continues.  I hope you’ll read about our growing Career Days and the opportunity that provides for our students to hear from some really incredible individuals. And just yesterday, 154 volunteers from our partner CIBC hosted MoneySavvy sessions at seven schools to teach students valuable financial literacy lessons. It was a great day!

Thanks to the each of you for your ongoing support of Big Shoulders Fund’s students and schools.  For those of you attending our 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament this Saturday, I look forward to seeing you there!

All my very best,

Josh Hale

Thank you to Volunteering Untapped Chicago and the 40 volunteers who joined us this past Saturday at St. Nicholas Cathedral School to sort donations made to the school, create candy bags for all the students, clean classrooms, plant flowers in the school garden, and more. These three hours helped to cross-off 120 hours of work for the school!
In Our Schools
High School Scholars College Symposium 2022

Big Shoulders Fund High School scholars participated in our virtual High School Scholars College Symposium earlier this month. Scholars had an opportunity to hear from Elizabeth Houlihan, a former Big Shoulders Fund scholar who is now the Director of the Academic Center for Excellence at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Her story of persisting through challenges was inspiring, and she shared her advice and wisdom with students.

During the evening, more than 400 scholars participated in grade-specific workshops, where they learned from guest facilitators about the college admissions process, career exploration, extracurriculars and enrichment activities, the college financial aid process, writing college essays, and living on a college budget.
Over the past couple of weeks, Big Shoulders Fund supporters have participated as speakers in Career Days throughout our network of schools. Students have enjoyed hearing from these civic leaders about their journeys to become who they are today. If you are interested in participating in a career day at one of our schools, please contact Sam Rodriguez.
