I hope this email finds you and your families well as we celebrate Mother’s Day. While social distancing may prevent us from a typical Mother’s Day gathering, we know in our hearts the special role they have played in our lives, whether it was putting food on the table or offering encouragement in dark moments.
Thanks to a generous gift from longtime supporters, Gerald and Jennifer Beeson, Big Shoulders Fund was able to do something special yesterday to honor mothers in the communities we serve. The Beesons fully funded (and helped distribute with their children!) meals for nearly 20,000 children, families in the communities where Big Shoulders Fund schools serve. The meals were prepared by 32 local restaurants and distributed at 31 Big Shoulders Fund schools, including at St. Gall School
where Gerald went to elementary school. Around the city, families lined up to receive hot meals served up by the Beesons, their family and friends, volunteers, and Big Shoulders Fund team members, principals, and teachers. My family joined in too and the smiles on the mothers’ and families’ faces spoke volumes.
The Beesons were inspired by the ongoing Feed It Forward program, initiated by Carol Lavin Bernick, that to date has enabled Big Shoulders Fund to partner with local restaurants to provide more than 20,000 meals at its schools since this crisis started. The combined efforts have enabled Big Shoulders Fund to distribute more than 40,000 meals to needy family’s and sustain local restaurants struggling due to COVID-19.
In these challenging times, I am inspired by people like the Beesons, Carol Lavin Bernick, and so many of you who are not content to sit on the sidelines. Instead, like many of our mothers, you have found ways to ease the burden of so many who are struggling, by putting food on the table and offering encouragement in a very dark time. Many thanks, God bless, and Happy Mother’s Day!
